Goodwood Handicap betting tips – Saturday, 16 May 2020

Behemoth racing news
Can Behemoth go one better this year and win The Goodwood at Morphettville this Saturday?

The fourth and final Group 1 of the South Australian Racing Carnival is The Furphy Goodwood over 1200m at Morphettville. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, but with no rain forecasted over the next few days, we can expect an upgrade come Saturday afternoon. The rail goes out 8m from the 1200m to the winning post but only 5m for the remainder of the course.

Best bets for The Goodwood 2020

A star studded line-up of 15 runners will face the starter, including 2018 winner Santa Ana Lane, Lightning Stakes winner Gytrash, Stradbroke Handicap winner Trekking as well as the likes of Sunlight and The Inevitable. There looks to be a genuine tempo set by outsider Free of Debt, Jungle Edge and the McEvoy pair of Sunlight and Xilong.

We are leaning towards last year’s runner-up, Behemoth, to go one better in the 2020 edition. The big son of All Too Hard was solid behind Jungle Edge first up on a soft track and will be better for the run. Up to 1200m, back onto a good track and second up ticks all the boxes for us and we think Todd Pannell can make it his second Group 1 in three weeks here. Drawn in barrier seven, he should settle behind the speed and be ready to bustle through in the final 100m. At $15, he looks a great bet.

With the rail out 8m, we could see a bias for those closest to the fence and close to the speed, so we think Xilong is a live chance. From barrier one, we expect Paul Gatt to lead on the 3yo filly and with 53.5kg she could kick away upon straightening. She is coming off a good win in the Euclase Stakes at Group 2 level where she carried 2kg more than what she will on Saturday. She’s never missed a place at the Morphettville 1200m and we think she can run a hole in her second Group 1 bid.

Last year’s Stradbroke Handicap winner, Trekking, rounds up our numbers. He chased the likes of Nature Strip first up on an unsuitable Heavy 8 track in the TJ Smith before hitting the line strongly to finish second in his last start. He is partnered with the experienced John Allen and can settle just off the speed from barrier seven. We think we will see him back to his best here.
