Gold Coast racing tips & best bets – Saturday, 16 May 2020

Garibaldi horse racing news
The Tony McEvoy-trained Garibaldi will contest the 1200m Gold Coast Guineas this Saturday.

The sun will be shining over Surfers Paradise on Saturday while playing host to three Group and Listed Races in the Ken Russell Memorial Classic (G3 1200m), Gold Coast Guineas (G3 1200m) and the Silk Stocking (LR 1200m). The rail goes out 1m from just the 1000m marker to the 400m but will stay true in the remainder. The nine races will be run on a Good track with the first to jump at 11:19am AEST. Aquis Park look to have a strong hold on the day with live chances engaged all across the card at their home track.

Ken Russell Memorial Classic betting tips

The 2yos will face off over 1200m in what will be a key lead-up to the Group 1 JJ Atkins Plate in a few weeks’ time. Wisdom of Water will jump the odds-on favourite and maps to get a beautiful run box seating behind Kavak and Always On Show.

We are with Saffiano here to make it back-to-back wins. Chris Waller’s colt was an impressive winner in Sydney three weeks ago and we think he can bring that form to Queensland. Under the guidance of Ryan Maloney, the More Than Ready colt can sit outside the favourite and use the outside to his advantage to press the button when he is ready. At $8, he appeals as a great each-way bet and the main danger to the favourite.

Wisdom of Water is the one to beat, as reflected in his $1.70 quote. The horse has done nothing wrong with a dominant first-up win as well as a great fourth in the Magic Millions Classic in January. Robbie Fradd should box seat from gate two and give the horse every chance, but we are happy to look elsewhere as the Edmunds galloper is priced too short in our opinion.

Best Bet
Saffiano @ $8

Gold Coast Guineas betting tips

Fifteen 3yos will contest this year’s Gold Coast Guineas in what is a quality field of Queensland and New South Wales sprinters. There is plenty of speed engaged here with The Odyssey, Bellevue Hill, Scathing and Elegant Grace all likely to push forward and challenge for the lead. Command’n’conquer is the current $4 favourite in what is a very open race.

MORE RACING TIPS: THE ANDREW RAMSDEN 2020

Garibaldi is our selection here. The Tony Gollan-trained colt gets a key gear change, swapping the blinkers for the winkers for the first time. Drawn in barrier four, champion jockey Jim Byrne will take a sit and let the race unfold in front of him. Two placings this time in should have the son of I Am Invincible peaking for this third up. The $16 appeals here and we are happy to be on.

Peter and Paul Snowden have the talented Hightail here as a definite chance on the second line of betting. The son of Written Tycoon was great first up when finishing strongly to win on the Kensington track. Hugh Bowman weighed in half a kilo over, which only added merit to his win. Maloney takes the ride here and should settle midfield from barrier eight before looking to close off late. The dry track will suit.

Best Bet
Garibaldi @ $16

Silk Stocking betting tips

The Listed Silk Stocking sees the fillies and mares engaged over 1200m. A quality, capacity field has been assembled for the final race of the day. Niedorp will jump favourite and looks to be the sole speed influence in the race.

We are heavily in the Niedorp corner here. There looks to be no speed inside here, so the favourite should cross the field from the outside barriers and get a soft lead. Gollan scratched her from the Gold Coast Guineas, which is worth $30,000 more. Down on the minimum weight, Baylee Nothdurft should be in for a sit-and-steer job. The 3yo filly has come back in great order this time in with two dominant performances and we expect this to be no different.

Ice Frost is the rank outsider, but we can’t let the Bel Esprit mare go around at $101 odds without us. The 6yo mare won second up at this track last preparation and was fair last start when finishing midfield on a day where nothing made ground. Doug Duryea has since trialled his 6yo at Beaudesert, where she won by nearly five lengths. She drops to 54kg under Andrew Spinks and can nearly box seat from barrier 12. In her last five runs she has clocked the quickest average sectionals in the entire field, so we would not be surprised to see her cause a massive upset here.

Best Bet
Niedorp @ $3.70
