Midweek tips

PUNTERS have been loving the quality midweek fields in Queensland during the Brisbane winter carnival and Gold Coast hosts another top meeting this Wednesday.

We have form, updated odds and free tips for all eight races on the card and the fields are holding up nicely after a period of fine weather.

It pays to follow the midweek form out of Gold Coast and it pays to have a bet with Ladbrokes.com.au which offers some of the best odds in Australia.

Race 1 – Sky Racing Maiden Plate (1100m)

Mishani Seeka was a well-supported runner on debut at Toowoomba and that should continue here. The Ben Currie-trained three-year-old finished two lengths behind the winner last start as the $3.20 favourite, but it should take good encouragement out of that effort and this isn’t much exposed form in this race. The daughter of Poet’s Voice looks to have plenty of speed and drawing barrier five should be a big bonus as it will get a cart into the race.

Milljet is on debut for Kelly Schweida after having two trials for one win. The Jet Spur filly is bred for early pace and that was on show when winning a trial at Deagon on August 2 last year. It hasn’t trialled since which is an interesting decision, but it has surely matured nicely and apprentice Alannah Fancourt takes some weight off its back which will help its winning chances.

Race 2 – Sky Racing Maiden Handicap (1400m)

Daring Deeds didn’t show much on debut when running 10th of 13 runners at Doomben, but it has since trialled well and it resumed with a nice run for fifth at Sunshine Coast. The Tony Gollan-trained gelding by I Am Invincible has the breeding to suggest it should break maiden grades soon and it wouldn’t have appreciated the rain-affected track last time to the races. Punters should expect quick improvement.

Sky Team finished seventh on debut, but it wasn’t far away from the leaders. The Matthew Dunn-trained gelding was 2.8 lengths behind the likes of Oh Boy and Mr Attitude, which is solid form to bring into this. It has since trialled twice and it scored a one-length win at Deagon last time out. That should have it on good order for this and bookmakers will likely have it short in the market.

Race 3 – Sky Racing F&M Maiden (1400m)

On A High is nearing a win after consecutive placings coming into this. The John Dann-trained filly turned around a poor performance at Doomben earlier this year to record a placing at Sunshine Coast and a last start placing on this track. It was no match for Love Conquers All last start when finishing 2.8-length behind the winner, but it was well supported on that day and punters should expect similar odds here from bookmakers.

Snapchat Girl has potential and it should find this easier than its last start. The Les Kelly-trained two-year-old took on a tough field on this track when running fourth behind Weekend Saga and Reef Knot. It has city class form this campaign and the daughter of Lope de Vega will only strengthen with time. Tricky from the wide barrier of 11, but consider.

Race 4 – Sky Raving C2 Handicap (900m)

Magic Diamond drops back in class after finishing sixth behind city winner Sir Donald last start. The Dunn-trained was a quality three-length winner prior to that at Ipswich and that form should hold up nicely back in class 2 grade. It has a placing behind Tumbler which is good form also and having tested the waters against some nice types in Sydney, it looks to have found its grade at this level.

Strive To Succeed to coming off a win at Toowoomba and it could make the step up in grade. The Pat Webster-trained four-year-old scored by just under a length at double figure odds and punters should be able to secure similar odds for this. The confidence is up with this gelding now and it could run another top effort at odds.

Race 5 – Sky Racing C5 Handicap (1400m)

We’re prepared to give Secret Blend another chance after disappointing last start. The Angela Plumb-trained gelding is only a shadow of the horse which finished second behind Punt Club at Moonee Valley earlier this year, but it should find this easier and the class should take it a long way. We’re not sure if the 1400m is its ideal distance, but keep an eye on betting moves.

Dustman is coming off a narrow win on this track and it looms as a top chance to go back-to-back. The Todd Fletcher-trained five-year-old scored narrowly over Oh Boy last start which is good form and it usually shows its best form on this track. It has won two of its three starts at Gold Coast and punters should include it in their win bets.

Race 6 – Sky Racing Benchmark 70 (1800m)

Snapper has been in solid form throughout the winter and it should go close. The Scott Morrisey-trained gelding scored a good win on this track in April, but followed that up with a poor run at Eagle Farm. That came behind some nice types so we’re prepared to forgive that effort and it hasn’t been far away since. Stepping up over 1800m has always looked the plan with this runner and it could capitalise.

Binary has only fair form, but it has been running solidly and a win doesn’t look far off. It finished second on this track two back and followed that up with a placing behind Liberty Island at Ipswich. That form has held up nicely and the Kelly Schweida-trained runner looks a good each way hope in this.

Race 7 – Sky Racing C1 Handicap (1400m)

Savwell won well on this track last start and it looks a good chance of repeating the dose. The David Vandyke-trained three-year-old was heavily backed into $1.95 and it did the job with ease, winning by over six lengths in a romp. It had always shown the ability to put it all together and now with that win under its belt, it could go on with the job. It has the breeding to suggest that won’t be its last win this preparation.

Jexerlent was also an impressive winner last start and it hasn’t been far away in all nine career starts. The Chris Munce-trained gelding beat a field of 15 runners last start which bodes well for this and the rise in distance was clearly the biggest attribute. It has been able to handle all track surfaces in the past and it should go close again.

Race 7 tip: Savwell to win at WilliamHill.com.au

Race 8 – Sky Racing C3 Plate (1300m)

Plucky Girl went close last start when second on this track and it could go one better here. The Toby Edmonds-trained three-year-old has been around the mark all campaign which has included two placings from three starts and it has been close behind some nice types in the process. This is a wide open field and punters could get over the odds value with Plucky Girl.

Princess Roulette has won two of its nine starts, including a last start win on this track. The Kelly-trained mare put two lengths on an easier field and on a heavy track, but this field isn’t the best it will ever face and it should get every chance with only 55.5kg on its back.
