George Ryder Stakes betting preview

Some of Australia’s top milers are set to do battle in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday over 1500m. A race that was won four times by the great mare Winx, as well as the likes of Lonhro and Weekend Hussler, this year’s edition is set to have another star of the turf added to the honour roll. Avilius is the $4.20 favourite with Sportsbet, just ahead of Funstar and Kolding. The speed in the race will come from last year’s winner Dreamforce, while Samadoubt could cross him and lead.

Avilius has sucked us in time and time again, and when we completely overlooked him last start, he nearly caught us with our pants down at any old price when half a length in third behind Verry Elleegant and Colette in the Chipping Norton. That is the right form for this, and we are confident that he can return to the winner’s stall. The rising eight-year-old never runs a bad race at Rosehill, with three wins and two thirds from just the five starts. Undefeated on Heavy tracks, the son of Pivotal will get the favours from the barrier six under Nash Rawiller and be finishing over the top of the tiring leaders.

Star Of The Seas gets the conditions to suit in this and should be rock-hard fit now fourth up. The six-year-old gelding ran fourth in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes, before winning in the same grade at Flemington in the Blamey Stakes. Two weeks ago the Chris Waller-trained son of Ocean Park ran a solid sixth in the All Star Mile on a deteriorating track behind Mugatoo and Russian Camelot – two very good milers. He has won three from five on Heavy tracks, which he will be dealt here, and is a four-time winner at this track. Drawn wide under Sam Clipperton, he is likely to settle out the back and be running home strongly. He nearly won the Doncaster 12 months ago, so this race would not be out of his reach.

It was great to see Gem Song back in the winner’s circle despite beating Bottega, who we had on top, and the Kris Lees-trained gelding now has genuine claims in this. He was super first up off a very long break and then went on with the job in the Newcastle Newmarket, storming home down the outside to win in a narrow photo. The five-year-old son of Your Song has won twice at Rosehill and once on a Soft track, so he should get around well. Third up off three trials as well, the gelding will be fit and coming home out wide, which could be the better part of the track by this stage in the afternoon. A good speck for the each-way punters.
