George Main Stakes 2020 betting tips & form guide
Randwick plays host to just the one Group 1 race on Saturday, with the 1600m George Main Stakes set to go around at 3:15pm AEST. Only seven runners are set to face the starter, but the small field reeks of quality. Last-start Group 1 winner Verry Elleegant is the current favourite ahead of Avilius and Dreamforce, who should get it all his own way out in front.

We are with Dreamforce as he should get to dictate the race under experienced front-running rider Nash Rawiller. He will have to do no work to find the lead from barrier one, which will be a huge advantage given he only has the two wins from nine starts over a mile. First up this prep he was beaten 17 lengths in the Winx Stakes, but he then turned that form around with an all-the-way win in the Tramway last start. We believe the track conditions had a big part to play there considering he has won only one from 10 on wet tracks but 12 from 25 on a good deck. He finds ideal Good 4 conditions here and can go one better than last year when second in this race.

It is unfortunate that there will be no third dividend, because Imaging looked a great each-way play. The Chris Waller import was absolutely luckless first up in the Winx Stakes and should definitely have finished in the placings. Kerrin McEvoy hops aboard and will give the gelding every chance from barrier five, likely to settle three pairs back on the outside. He is another horse who will appreciate a drier track, while the 1500m second up will make him very hard to beat. For any readers of our Spring Carnival Racing reviews, we’ll be hoping there is market support for Imaging after we locked in $11 odds in all-in markets three weeks ago.
Despite not having Verry Elleegant or Avilius in the top two, we have absolutely no knock on them at all. Verry Elleegant was super winning the Winx Stakes when caught wide throughout, and she will appreciate stepping up in trip with a bit more fitness in her legs. She dominated the autumn and has been spruiked as the horse to take over Winx’s crown as the best in Australia. She’ll land two pairs back on the fence from barrier one under James McDonald and rattle home nicely. Avilius was super impressive coming from last to finish fourth in the Chelmsford. He clocked the quickest closing sectionals of the race and will relish being second up. The only knock we have found for these two quality animals is that they both would prefer a softer track.
