Gawler racing preview

Nine races are set down for decision on Saturday afternoon at Gawler as South Australian racing makes a rare weekend venture away from Morphettville. With perfect conditions forecasted and the track coming up a Good 4, we’re set fair for a cracking day of racing. The rail is out 2m from the 900m to 500m mark and then true the remainder, so there should be no excuses for any runner throughout the meeting. The first at Gawler is set to jump at 12:36pm AEDT.

Best BetRace 1 – Daily Spirit (#9) $1.90 with Sportsbet

Our best of the day comes in the opening event, where Daily Spirit will look to build on her first-up second when chasing home a handy type in Zoushine at Morphettville a fortnight ago. On that occasion she sat outside the leader but couldn’t match the turn of foot the eventual winner produced. The Macdonald & Gluyas filly will be better off for that run and should be good enough to break her maiden at start five.

Next BestRace 5 – Picargo (#1) $3.30 with Sportsbet

We’ll be hoping that the Ryan Balfour and Jacob Opperman combination can help build a bank before we launch into the Gawler quaddie. Having not finished worse than second in his three outings this campaign, we’re tipping Picargo will bring up his second win of the campaign with a well-timed run here. He clearly has a superior turn of foot to his rivals and will prove incredibly difficult to go past if he finds enough room at the top of the straight.

Best ValueRace 7 – Magic Dee (#7) $7.50 with Sportsbet

Shane Oxlade and Kayla Crowther combine with Magic Dee, who has put together consecutive runner-up performances at Strathalbyn and then here at Gawler. The four-year-old mare stays at the Gawler 1200m and will appreciate the speed that will come from the leaders. She is a galloper who tends to settle towards the back of the field and who goes through the gears as she builds to swoop on the leaders. If she sits a pair closer than what she did a fortnight ago, she will be fighting out the finish here.
