Full form & tips for Tasmanian Guineas Day, January 12

IT is Tasmanian Guineas Day at Hobart on Friday and we are super excited about what the day will bring.

Aside from the feature there are a number of hotly anticipated races taking place, so rather than waste your time building up an event you’re already pumped about, let’s get straight into the tips.

Race 1 – Maiden Plate (1100m)

No surprises to see we’re tipping a Gee Gee horse here. The two-year-old sensation in the making Gee Gee Pengala missed out by a nose last time out as a short-priced favourite and should benefit from that experience.

Race 1 tip: Gee Gee Pengala to win at Sportsbet

Race 2 – Maiden Plate (1100m)

Cascade City debuted well at this track as a big outsider on December 15, finishing second and with natural progression it should go on to win this one. From a good draw it should feature prominently here.

Race 3 – Class 1 Handicap (1600m)

Sidestreet Lad was ordinary upon resumption on December 15, but the horse has won second-up before and trialed well after that disappointing showing. From an ideal draw it will be hard to beat.

Race 4 – Benchmark 72 (1100m)

The Captain is in stellar form and looks set to continue the winning ways. We tipped the runner last-time out when it won at Devonport and there’s no reason to think the good form will be stopping any time soon.

Race 4 tip: The Captain to win at Sportsbet

Race 5 – Benchmark 68 (1400m)

A lot of the focus will be on stablemate Catalyst Fire, but Jo Anconi has serious claims here. The horse won well at BM62 level at Longford on New Years Day and while it will have to hunt hard for the front out wide, if it gets across nicely it will be taking this race out.

Race 5 tip: Jo Anconi to win at William Hill

Race 6 – Brighton Cup (2100m)

We like what Weekend Whisky brings to the table and we think it will be hard to hold out here. The horse has only lost once in its four starts this preparation and that loss was only narrow. The four-year-old is one of the more promising gallopers in this field.

Race 7 – Tasmanian Guineas (1600m)

Mister Songman has lost just once in its five race career, and it still managed to round out the placings on that occasion. A win on Friday would complete a hat-trick of victories and if the last-start blitzing is any indication, it will take this one out with ease.

Race 8 – Benchmark 62 (1600m)

Century Arrow should end the day on a winning note for Horse Betting followers. The horse has never finished outside the quinella placings in its seven career starts and a win on Friday would be its third-straight success. The horse is running for the first time since Boxing Day and should relish the short let-up.
