Full form & free tips, Wednesday at Mornington, December 13

Midweek tips

WEDNESDAY’S mid-week tips head to country Victoria as Mornington hosts a competitive eight race card to break up the working week.

After a great week tipping both in Sydney and on the final day of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival, we take a bunch of confidence into the seaside meet, which has plenty of great gallopers running around hoping to get a early summer win on the board.

Race 1 – Maiden Plate (1500m)

Darren Weir-trained Captain Henry looks to be one of the best horses in the opening event. Having placed in its last two races, the three-year-old colt gets an ideal race to break the maiden. Recent races suggest a win is just around the corner and we believe that it will be fighting out the finish.

Broo Boss looks best placed to challenge the Weir runner. After debuting dismally at Bendigo in June, the horse was given a five month break and returned in top order, just missing out by under half a length at the same venue it confronts on Wednesday. We are expecting an improvement on that run and we think it will get the job done here.

Race 1 tip: Broo Boss to win at Neds

Race 2 – Maiden Plate (1600m)

Mussoorie Magic has finished twice from its two career starts to date, and if natural progression takes its course the colt will be taking this race out. Last start the three-year-old jumped as a $1.57 favourite at Crownbet but failed to win after making a tardy get away. A clean break will see the horse easily winning this one.

Alnaas also has a perfect placing record and gets the advantage of a 2kg relief on our main elect. Last time out at Cranbourne the horse races wide as a short-priced favourite and subsequently ran out of gas, but under Craig Williams we expect the horse to be ridden with more patience on Wednesday. The horse is a definite winning hope.

Race 3 – Benchmark 64 (1200m)

Crystal Spirit is racing second-up after its breakthrough win last-start as an even-money favourite. The horse has never missed a placing in its career prior to the maiden victory, and on its benchmark 64 debut we are expecting a similarly good performance from the Zahra and Ellerton-trained gelding.

Topweight Prevailing Winds is a handy type that never seems too far away. After winning at the third time of asking in Wodonga, the Weir-trained three-year-old has missed the first four just once, and put together a terrific run at Sandown in similar company as a $21 outsider via Sportsbet. We think Prevailing Winds is the horse to beat here.

Race 3 tip: Pervailing Winds to win at Sporstbet

Race 4 – Benchmark 64 (1000m)

Go Gracey has been racing in great form recently and looks set to break through soon this preparation. After jumping at close to $20 back-to-back the horse produced two blinding runs to go down by less than a combined two lengths. Off the back of a 59 day freshen up we think the horse will be highly competitive.

Divertente is second-up where it has previously placed in the past. Resuming three-weeks ago at Yarra Valley the mare won convincingly as a key elect and we think it will run up to that performance again on Wednesday. The horse has won three times over the distance previously and will be hard to hold out here.

Race 4 tip: Go Gracey to win at William Hill

Race 5 – Benchmark 64 (1500m)

Elegantly Wasted has been racing in great form and is a last-start winner at the Mornington track. After dropping back slightly in grade to record that win, we believe the horse is right where it needs to be ratings wise and we believe another great run is in the offing.

She’s Popular won on debut two months ago, and after an after a disappointing showing at Flemington during Melbourne Cup week, but after a second placing at Sandown in a benchmark 64 race, we believe the horse is ready to win again. The Hayes, Hayes and Daberning team will have the horse cherry-ripe for Wednesday and it should be winning this race towards the bottom of the weights.

Race 6 – Benchmark 64 (2000m)

Brando is jumping straight out of maiden grade into a benchmark 64 race, but we think it can make the transition seamlessly today. The horse came out of a maiden that the super-smart Persian Empire came out of, rounding out the first four in that race, which shows the class this runner possesses.

Rokda Kasba is a horse that needs some luck. The Moloney-trained galloper has a win at benchmark 64 grade in the past, and only just over a month ago the horse placed in a benchmark 70 race. At its peak it takes this race out, but whether it can produce its best remains to be seen.

Race 6 tip: Brando to win at CrownBet

Race 7 – Benchmark 70 (2000m)

Manning Road missed the placings last time out, but before that the horse had recorded back-to-back wins in benchmark events. This progressive type is a go-forward type that will relish jumping from gate two, and we believe under these conditions it will be the horse to beat.

Street Spun is a last-start winner at benchmark 64 grade and it looms as a contender here despite the short jump in grade. The horse will get the chance to drift back from gate nine and settle towards the back of the field before unleashing a withering burst in the latter stages of the contest. Whether it has enough in the tank to run down Manning Road while carrying slightly more weight will be the issue.

Race 7 tip: Manning Road to win at Sportsbet

Race 8 – Benchmark 64 (1200m)

Valderrama is racing first-up on Wednesday where it has won twice and placed once across four attempts. Prior to being turned out the horse was on a magical run, placing in five straight races which included three consecutive wins. First-up form suggests it is a definite winning hope.

Wilde Gem is a horse that has plenty of upside. Winning three of its five races to date, the four-year-old comes into Wednesday’s event after a strong Pakenham success despite getting vetted at the barriers. The son of Equiano looks to be a strong sprinting prospect heading into the future.

Race 8 tip: Wilde Gem to win at Neds
