Frustrating start to 2YO season for McEvoy
Tony McEvoy was eagerly awaiting the start of two-year-old season with his team of youngsters.
However it has brought the trainer a lot of frustration despite producing a couple of winners.
McEvoy believes his statistics could be better but for the vagaries of two-year-old racing.
He was set to kick off in Melbourne at the start of October with Domination and Box On Collins in the Maribyrnong Trial at Flemington, only to have to scratch the two colts.
And his promising filly Time Awaits, a debut winner in Adelaide, was scratched from the two-year-old race at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day.
“I would be going a lot better if I could have run them,” McEvoy said.
“They’ll be fine next time but they were just a bit too young and didn’t quite make it.”
At Flemington on Saturday McEvoy saddles Azazel and Aspect in the Maribyrnong Plate.
Azazel was successful at Moonee Valley on debut and McEvoy believes the Snitzel colt has the makings of a Blue Diamond hope next year.
“He’s gone ahead and hasn’t left an oat,” McEvoy said.
“He’s worked beautifully and I can’t fault him in any way.”
Stablemate Aspect makes his debut and will be ridden by Melbourne Cup winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy, McEvoy’s nephew.
Aspect is by US sire Pluck, a Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and is the first of the breed McEvoy has trained.
“I know very little about them,” McEvoy said.
“But he’s a nice horse that will be better at three.
“He’s trialled nicely, he’s sound and he’s well.
“The owner, he’s a breeder and asked if the horse is fine can we run him in a black type race.
“So that’s what we’re doing.”
Azazel shares favouritism at $4.40 with Wait For No One while Aspect is an $8.50 chance.
