What | Civic Stakes Day 2025 |
Where | Royal Randwick Racecourse – Alison Rd, Randwick NSW 2031 |
When | Saturday, June 21, 2025 |
First Race | 11am AEST |
Royal Randwick is the destination for feature racing in Sydney on Saturday as the Listed Civic Stakes (1400m) headlines a 10-race meeting. The track was rated a Soft 6 at the time of acceptances, but with clear skies forecast, an upgrade to a firmer deck would not come across as a surprise. The rail will be out 3m for the entire circuit, with the first race set to jump at 11am AEST.
Civic Stakes Tip: Green Shadows
Green Shadows was beaten less than a length by Headley Grange at the Randwick 1300m on June 7, and when the pair clash in the 2025 Civic Stakes, he looks poised to turn the tables on the favourite. The five-year-old gelding simply could not match the sharp turn of foot of Headley Grange last time, but as they step up to 1400m, Green Shadows will pose more of a threat. The son of Menari has three wins and four seconds from 15 starts at the trip, and if Braith Nock can find a back to follow into the home straight, Green Shadows will take a power of beating.
Civic Stakes
Race 9 – #18 Green Shadows (20)
5yo Gelding | T: Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou | J: Braith Nock (a) (53kg)
Best Bet at Randwick: Raikkonen
Raikkonen was only beaten by a length in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) at Doomben on June 4, and as he steps back in grade to BM78 company, he looks well placed to find winning form once again. That run had plenty of merit, and he was an impressive Gosford winner the start prior. Anna Roper will have the son of Shalaa towards the rear of the field on Saturday, and if he can handle the 61kg following Roper’s claim, Raikkonen should be too good.
Best Bet
Race 8 – #1 Raikkonen (15)
3yo Gelding | T: Bjorn Baker | J: Anna Roper (a2) (63kg)
Next Best at Randwick: Pippie Beach
Pippie Beach was denied by the barest of margins in a BM78 at Randwick on June 7 over 1600m when thundering home from the rear, and as she rises to 1800m third-up, she looks poised to go one step better. The four-year-old mare is blessed with an explosive finish, and with the likes of She’s Unusual and Fay’s Angels set to make this a genuinely run affair, the race sets up perfectly for Pippie Beach to be launching down the heart of the track late.
Next Best
Race 4 – #3 Pippie Beach (5)
4yo Mare | T: Chris Waller | J: Jace McMurray (a3) (60kg)
Best Value at Randwick: Hooligan Tommy
Hooligan Tommy has plenty of ability and, at $10 with horse racing bookmakers, presents great value in the opener. The four-year-old gelding was a dominant Kembla Grange winner on May 31 over 1600m, a trip he stays at on Saturday and one that he relishes. With three wins and three minors from seven starts at the mile, it looks like the son of Ocean Park gets the perfect setup in this BM72. He is a genuine backmarker, but with plenty of speed engaged, Keagan Latham should have Hooligan Tommy finishing best down the centre of the track.
Best Value
Race 1 – #6 Hooligan Tommy (7)
4yo Gelding | T: John Sargent | J: Keagan Latham (58kg)
