Sydney metropolitan racing heads to Royal Randwick on Saturday with a nine-race card highlighted by the 1400m Octagonal Handicap. There has been plenty of rain around the New South Wales capital during the week, so we can expect to be racing on a soggy surface. The rail will be out 6m for the entirety of the course.

Miss Einstein backers are still trying to pick themselves up off the floor after her luckless third last start. Jason Collett nearly fell at the 100m when he got tight for room between the eventual quinella. But Saturday is a new day and we think she can get the job done this time. The rise in trip to 1500m, where she was successful at her only attempt back in October, will suit the Dundeel mare. She was a bullish seven-length winner on a Heavy 10 and has placed once on a Soft 6, so the wet track will not be a problem. With plenty of speed injected, Collett will let it all unfold in front of him and finish off down the centre of the track from barrier eight.
The lightly raced 7yo gelding has been off the scene for over 12 months but looks ready to win first up with two Open Trial wins by a collective margin of 7.4 lengths. The son of I Am Invincible has had seven starts for four wins and three seconds and we think he can make it five from eight in this. His form over 1000m reads well and he is a winner at the track. Adam Hyeronimus will push forward from the wide alley and hope to make his own luck in front. The wet track could be a slight query as he has only had the one start on a Soft 5, where he was beaten by half a length. If the market is with him off his break, we think he will go very close to winning this.
David Payne’s 3yo simply annihilated his rivals at Wyong last start by nearly eight lengths on a wet track and we don’t see why he can’t do it again here. He is obviously in a tougher grade, but with the rail out 6m we could see a track that favours leaders. While he may not find the front from barrier 12 like he did last time out, he will be thereabouts. Robbie Dolan’s claim gets him down to 54kg, which is of great benefit for the son of Snitzel. At $14, we are happy to be with Crown Affair on an each-way basis in what isn’t an overly strong race.
