France downs stablemate to win Inglis 3YO Guineas

France has upset its more fancied stablemate Calanda in the $400,000 Inglis 3YO Guineas at Scone

THE best of the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained runners was meant to be $3.30 second favourite Calanda, but it was France which finished best down the outside in the $400,000 Inglis 3YO Guineas.

The Redoute’s Choice colt didn’t fire on the wet track last time out at Randwick, but some punters were expecting quick improvement and that’s exactly what they got.

Tye Angland settled the three-year-old at the tail of the field and despite getting run into by its stablemate, it was able to regather momentum and come with a withering burst down the outside to narrowly defeat Prized Icon.

Co-trainer Paul Snowden was pleased to take the result with the lesser-fancied runner, which paid $18.30 at Ladbrokes.com.au.

“I thought he had run quite well (at Randwick), things didn’t fall his way the other day,” Snowden said.

“He run into a scrimmage himself when the stablemate came out and gave him a couple of shoves halfway down the straight which wasn’t ideal.

“To his credit, he was gallant and picked himself up and he’s hit the line enormous.”

Snowden was evidently disappointed with the way Calanda performed after being well-backed in the market. The son of Snitzel was placed just in front of its stablemate throughout the run, but it never settled and ran about in the closing stages.

“He never relaxed the whole race which was disappointing as he’s not an aggressive horse at home,” Snowden said.

“That had a massive effect on the way he finished, but all credit to the other horse.”

Prized Icon came with a big run, but France had all the momentum and finished strongly on its outside.

Spright battled on nicely to take third in front of Just Dreaming with Calanda failing under the pressure late.

There was plenty of drama pre-race when equal second-favourite Mr Sneaky dropped rider Jason Collett before taking off around the Scone track and jumping multiple fences to eventually end up in a neighbouring paddock.
