Foxplay gets Waller and Bowman off to a winning start at Rosehill

CHAMPION trainer Chris Waller got his day off to a good start when two-year-old filly Foxplay broke through for its first career win.

The daughter of Foxwedge had strong form prior which included a fifth in the Widden Stakes on debut, and the bookmakers were forced to shorten it to $1.50 at Crownbet upon closing after opening at $1.90. The opposition it faced here was a step down in class and jockey Hugh Bowman gave the filly an easy ride in transit.

“She jumped well today, put herself into the race,” Bowman said. “There’s not a lot of her, what I was impressed about was the length of her stride.

“I was travelling very comfortably, she responded nicely, so I’m very happy with her.”

Foxplay finished fourth behind the well-performed Kiss And Make Up two starts back at Canterbury and although the form leading into the Golden Slipper was slightly too tough for it, Waller believes there is a nice future ahead of it.

“She’s threatened to be a pretty talented filly,” Waller said. “She’s either just run into one better or had bad luck, she put it all together today.

“It’s always strong form, any Sydney two-year-old race leading up to the Golden Slipper. Even fourth, fifth and sixth is good enough to come and win one of these races.”

Foxplay sat on the speed throughout the 1350m journey and was presented around the home turn. Third-favourite Cogliere was challenging on its outside, but the wide run with Andrew Adkins in the saddle was telling over the final 100m. Foxplay pulled away for an easy win over Cogliere with debutante Moohariba grabbing third late on the line.

Waller is lining up the $85,000 2YO Handicap at Rosehill in two weeks time.

“She’s a pretty laid back filly,” Waller said. “Copy-book ride from Hugh Bowman in the small field.

“Confidence wise another 1400m in a couple of weeks time.”

Waller and Bowman unite again with Dinghu Mountain in the Tabcorp 3YO Rating 74. The wet-track specialist is currently $5 with Sportsbet to win Race 5.
