Form, tips & selections for Stawell, Friday January 5

A DIFFERENT kind of racing takes place at Stawell this Friday as the gallops return to the Victorian rural city.

Alongside Cranbourne on Friday night and Mornington on Saturday, Stawell could be one of only three Victorian venues racing this weekend due to heat restrictions, so punters need to keep that in mind.

Tre Dieci won over course and distance last time out on December 9 and looks well placed to do it again. The horse gets a 2kg penalty on the back of that win, but there’s no reason to think it can not carry 61kg to victory on Friday.

Race 1 tip: Tre Dieci to win at Sportsbet

Race 2 – Maiden (1300m)

Blackjack Lass placed on debut at Horsham and will learn a lot from that experience. The Weir runner was away slowly that day and still rounded out the placings, so from a decent draw and the added help of the debut run we think it can get the job done at the second time of asking.

Race 2 tip: Blackjack Lass to win at Neds

Race 3 – Maiden Plate (1300m)

In a particularly weak maiden Petronas stands out more than others. The horse has been racing at the mile, where it was unsuccessful so the drop back in trip should prove an astute choice for a galloper that has never missed a placing.

Race 3 tip: Petronas to win at Ladbrokes

Race 4 – Maiden (1100m)

Just Written is second-up where it has placed twice from three attempts. This maiden is incredibly hard to pick with 16 potential runners taking to the track but this horse has placed third on back-to-back occasions so it is hard to overlook it despite the nasty draw.

Race 4 tip: Just Written win at William Hill

Race 5 – Benchmark 58 (1600m)

Life’s Drink will need to overcome a tricky barrier but it has the ability to win if it can get a good run in transit. The horse placed second in the same graded at at Colac, so we know the galloper is up to scratch.

Race 5 tip: Life’s Drink to win at Sportsbet

Race 6 – Benchmark 64 (1100m)

Oosterman won at benchmark 58 level last start, and we think it can handle the step-up in class. While it is the horse’s debu at Stawel, Oosterman has a great record at this distance and will be hard to hold out.

Race 6 tip: Oosterman to win at Crownbet

Race 7 – Benchmark 70 (1300m)

Kapaulenko has been in terrific form recently and looks well poised here. In the last four races the horse has finished second three times, all of which were at, or slightly above this grade.

Race 7 tip: Kapaulenko to win at Neds

Race 8 – Benchmark 58 (1300m)

Our Dexter will spear out from the middle draw and should settle just behind the speed. From there the in-form runner can beat this field easily. The seven-year-old is good enough to win at this level and we think it will finish off the Stawell card in style.

Race 8 tip: Our Dexter to win at Neds
