Race 1 – Gippsland Region 2YO Handicap (1400m)

Royal Symphony couldn’t have been more impressive on debut when winning by 3.25 lengths at Pakenham and it looks capable of winning at this level. The Tony McEvoy-trained colt was well-supported to win on that occasion and it has been backed from an opening quote of $2.40 into $2.25 for this. The draw makes it harder here, but respect its ability.

Anchor Bid is bred to love the longer distances (High Chaparral x Zapurple) and the increase to 1400m will help its cause. The Darren Weir-trained two-year-old finished over three lengths from the winner on debut at Ballarat, but it needs more time and it could run a big race here at each way odds of $13 and $4 for the place.

Race 1 tip: Anchor Bid to place ($4) at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 2 – Barwon South West Region 3YO (1100m)

Ken’s Dream has been a touch disappointing since winning impressively at Caulfield in April, but it has been taking on harder fields than this. The Weir-trained three-year-old didn’t have the best of luck in the Euclase Stakes at Morphettville before battling on well at Moonee Valley last start. It placed at its only start at Flemington and although running down the straight might not suit, it is at value odds of $7 after opening at $6.

Ashlor continued its good race record when winning at Morphettville last start. The three-year-old has now won six from nine starts and it showed good ability when running fifth in the Euclase. This won’t be an easy race to win down the Flemington straight, but it has ability and punters are getting a good price.

Race 2 tip: Ken’s Dream to win ($7) at Bet365.com

Race 3 – Loddon Mallee Region Handicap (1400m)

Despite a poor form line Tsaritsa is the opening $6 favourite. The Chris Waller-trained mare has been running on late at its last couple starts, but it hasn’t been able to recapture its great form of last year. The four-year-old is a winner of four from 16 starts and running at Flemington should give it time to find its feet and make a late run at them.

Born Magic is a long shot chance at $23, but it represents value. The O’Sullivan-trained four-year-old hasn’t yet won on a dry track, but the projected rain to fall on Saturday will help its cause and it was making good ground late last start, It has won twice at this distance and carrying 54kg will give it a chance of winning.

Race 3 tip: Born Magic to win ($23) at Ladbrokes.com.au

Race 4 – Grampians Region Handicap (2000m)

Sayed looks to have plenty of potential after winning well at Sandown last start. The Waller-trained four-year-old set the pace and was unable to be run down with Craig Williams in the saddle. He has stuck with the front runner and despite rising in weight to 59kg, it looks an each way chance at $7.50.

Ashlee Marie will continue to improve as it steps up over more ground and its last start win was a good indication. The Richard Laming-trained mare was too tough for them in the straight at Sandown over the mile and dropping in weight for this to 55kg will make it even harder to beat. It has the ability to drop back from the draw and run on well.

Race 4 tip: Ashlee Marie to win ($7) at CrownBet.com.au

Race 5 – North East Region Handicap (2520m)

Megablast is better suited with the sting out of the track, but there aren’t many quality types in this race and it could take advantage. The Nigel Tiley-trained Kiwi runner was only nailed late on the line at Moonee Valley and it will continue to improve with that run. All seven of its win have come on rain-affected ground, but the rise in distance is ideal and it could feature here at $6.50.

Shapokee is a last start winner for Simon Morrish and this distance is ideal having won over 2400m. The imported son of High Chaparral defeated fellow import Great Glen at Wolverhampton before coming to Australia and it looks to have found its best form now. It won’t have to work much from the inside barrier and it should run well again.

Race 5 tip: Shakopee to win ($7) at Ladbrokes.com.au

Race 6 – 2017 Country Achiever Gerald Egan Handicap (1100m)

Lake Como mixes its form, but it won nicely at Flemington last start and it should be considered based on that. The Pat Hyland-trained sprinter loves this track with three wins from four starts and it ran a quick enough time last start to suggest it can keep up with these. The light weight helps and it should go close at $6.50.

Ability has plenty of it and it was impressive when winning at Moonee Valley last start. The Robert Smerdon-trained four-year-old flashed home to score by a length and despite having not finished in the money in two starts at Flemington, it looks to have improved enough to put that record behind it. It will likely settle back and Williams will look to get on the back of the front runners.

Race 6 tip: Lake Como to win ($6.50) at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 7 – David Bourke Provincial Plate (1600m)

Rewarding Effort hasn’t quite hit top form this campaign, but it was running on well late last start. The Cindy Alderson-trained four-year-old gets to its preferred distance where it has won two-from-two and the conditions look ideal. It gets Craig Williams in the saddle at a weight of 54kg and that makes it tough to beat at $4.20.

Hot Ruby is right on the heels of Rewarding Effort in the market at $5. The Luke Oliver-trained six-year-old went close behind Violent Snow at Moonee Valley last start and it wasn’t tested when winning on this track its start prior. It rises in grade for this, but it looks capable of handling it and a nice run should come on Saturday.

Race 7 tip: Rewarding Effort to win ($4.20) at CrownBet.com.au

Race 8 – Brian Beattie Handicap (1400m)

Tshahitsi comes into this with consecutive wins under its belt and it looks to have better than average talent. The Tasmanian-based gelding scored by 3.25 lengths in a dominant display at Flemington last start and the Echuca Cup winner looks well placed to continue its winning run. The seven-time winner at this distance has drawn awkwardly in barrier 13 and it’s drifting in the market from $3.40 to $3.60, but it remains a top pick.

Cannyescent has also drawn awkwardly in barrier 12, but Lindsay Park-trained gelding has good tactical speed to overcome it. The four-year-old is coming off a stylish win at Sandown where it defeated the consistent Data Point and although it failed to fire at its last Flemington run, it looks better prepared this time around. Track conditions won’t worry it too much and it gets a significant weight advantage over Tshahitsi.

Race 8 tip: Cannyescent to win ($3.60) at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 9 – Bay And Ranges Region Handicap (1600m)

Samovare has been well-backed into $3.40 after opening at $3.80. The Lindsay Park-trained filly has won two of its six starts which included the W.A. Champion Stakes in Perth. We have seen the former Perth runners go well this winter and this three-year-old filly looks to have above average ability. This isn’t an easy field to beat, but punters are confident.

Widgee Turf finally scored an overdue win last start and it could continue on with it now. The Patrick Payne-trained gelding scored by two lengths at Sandown against a good field and the consistent type looks a good winning chance again. It has drawn well in barrier three and we’re expecting another solid run at $5.50 after opening at $6.

Race 9 tip: Samovare to win ($3.40) at Bet365.com
