Turnbull Stakes Day is what many people call ‘Moving Day’ for the Spring Carnival, where trainers will be hoping their horses reach peak fitness in a bid to go on with it during the Spring Carnival.
Chris Waller trained Verry Elleegant has come up a $5.00 favourite for the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes, where she comes to Melbourne third up after mixed results in Sydney to begin her spring campaign. Melbourne Cup hopeful’s Surprise Baby and Master Of Wine are well in the market for the Turnbull, whilst last year’s winner Kings Will Dream is at a nice each way price of $17.00
The Bart Cummings comes up for the opening leg of the quaddie, where the winner of the prestigious race gets a ticket straight into the Group 1 2020 Melbourne Cup. It is joined by the Rose of Kingston Stakes, The Gilgai Stakes and The Edward Manifold Stakes as the feature races on the card.
The first race of the blockbuster card is set to jump at 12.05pm.
Chris Waller sent September Run down the straight for her first start in Melbourne last time out, and she scored quite convincingly when providing the meetings best splits three weeks ago. The experience of already racing down the straight will help immensely here, and if Craig Williams can get her in a similar spot in midfield she will prove hard to hold out. The runner-up in that Flemington win, Swats That; came out and absolutely bolted in at The Valley so the win at Flemington is clearly good form line to follow.

The Everest bound Tofane for Mike Moroney looks to get in perfectly at the weights here in the Gilgai Stakes. Her first up run has never been her best, but has two career wins from three starts when second up. With this being her final race before the Everest, it will need to be a proper performance to see her get beaten. The Good 4 that greets her on Saturday will only benefit her, with three of her five wins coming on dry tracks.
