Flemington betting tips & quaddie picks – Saturday, 8 August 2020

Nature Strip

We are racing at Flemington for the first time in the new season with a nine-part card that includes the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap. The rail will be out 10m for the entire circumference, while the track is rated Soft 6 with a likely downgrade if the forecasted rain comes overnight. Racing is scheduled to commence at 12:05pm AEST, with the Aurie’s Star set for 3:15pm.

Best Bet
Race 8 – Chicago Cub @ $5.50 Sportsbet

Mike Moroney and Lachie King combine with the talented Chicago Cub, who resumes in a 1000m BM90. He is a three-time winner at Flemington, which includes a win over straight-track specialist Prezado at the end of his last campaign. His first-up record is extremely good (3:2-0-1), and we expect him to capitalise on that here. He’ll get a lovely run just off the pace and have plenty of galloping room in the concluding stages to go right on by. King’s 2kg claim gets Chicago Cub in with just 57kg as he shoots for three straight wins.

Next Best
Race 5 – Rivet Delight @ $6 Sportsbet

Former Hong Kong galloper Rivet Delight has had just the one run in Australia when fourth at Caulfield on July 25. He got a long way back, was blocked for runs and forced to come four wide in the straight when first up for 55 weeks over 1400m, so we believe there was a lot of merit in that run. He was a Group 1 and Group 2 winner in the UK and beat the likes of Thunder Snow, D’bai and Yucatan, which is outstanding form for a race of this calibre. He shouldn’t be too far away in the run for Declan Bates in what looks to be a slowly run affair. We think he can win this second up for Lindsay Smith.

Best Value
Race 4 – Reserve Street @ $13 Sportsbet

Ciaron Maher and David Eustace combine with in-form hoop Ben Melham on Reserve Street in a 1720m BM84. His last start over 1800m was a very good second when chasing hard behind Tavirun, who was well supported that day. The gelding will race with blinkers (near side) for the first time, which is a great gear change for this galloper in a bid to keep him hitting the line straight and hard over the top. Drawn to do no work form barrier three, Melham can bide his time and push out in the straight. The $13 appeals.
