First Saturday Randwick winner for King

A week after her riding her first metropolitan Saturday winner at Rosehill, apprentice Rachel King has brought her form to Randwick.

King rode a double at Rosehill last Saturday but admitted it was particularly special to win on the Jason Coyle-trained Memes on the track she calls home.

The 26-year-old, who is indentured to Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, has had a solid grounding in provincial and country racing and now wants to make her mark in town.

She has previously won races on Memes at Kembla Grange and Hawkesbury.

“It’s great to see her bring her form from the provincials to town,” King said.

“And it’s great for me to get a Saturday winner here at Randwick where I am based.”

After 148mm of rain in the past week, Randwick was naturally heavy but jockeys said the track was fair.

“It’s very heavy,” King said.

“It took her a while to find her next gear but when she did, she went to the line strongly.”

Memes ($4.40) put 1-1/4 lengths on the favourite In Times Of War ($4.20) with the latter posting her sixth second placing from eight starts which include two wins.

Jason Collett, who won the opening race on Champagne Cuddles, said the track had played well.

“I don’t think it’s that bad,” he said.

“I walked it before the races and thought it was better than some have been saying.”
