Exocet firms in Thousand Guineas market after Caulfield win

EXOCET looms as a major 1000 Guineas threat after winning Saturday’s PFD Food Services Supports Lasallian Foundation Plate at Caulfield.

The Lee and Anthony Freedman-trained filly came from well off the pace to finish over the top of long-shot chances Outback Rain ($67) and Whyouask ($36), but co-trainer Anthony Freedman might head towards the Edward Manifold on October 2 or the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield.

“She’s by Smart Missile out of a Zabeel mare, so she might run the Oaks trip,” Freedman said.

“They weren’t the best fillies today but she still did well. You might run in the Guineas or we might go to the Manifold because the (Flemington) track may suit her better than here.”

Exocet firmed in from $51 to $17 for the Group 1 Thousand Guineas, but jockey Dwayne Dunn thinks it’s best suited to the Oaks.

“I just think she’s more of an Oaks-type of filly than going into the Thousand Guineas,” Dunn said.

Dunn believes there’s plenty of improvement left in the three-year-old filly.

“Sometimes you put them in those situations too early before they can handle it and it can go pear-shaped,” he said.

“They’ll make that decision in the next few days I suppose, but personally I’d like to see her go towards the Oaks if we can.”
