Egg Tart withdrawn from G1 Epsom Handicap

The Chris Waller-trained Egg Tart has been scratched from the Epsom Handicap, the Group One race for which she was second favourite.

Egg Tart, who has been battling an eye complaint, had been the subject of ongoing veterinarian scrutiny during the week.

Waller told Racing NSW stewards on Friday that Egg Tart’s near side eye irritation had not improved enough for her to take her place in the $1 million mile race at Randwick on Saturday.

“Unfortunately Egg Tart’s eye has not responded as quickly as we would have liked and without the right treatment we have found there has been limited improvement over the past 72 hours,” Waller said.

She had been treated with anti-inflammatory medication but Racing NSW stewards said that course of action had to end earlier this week in accordance with the rules of racing.

Waller said the anti-inflammatory medication would now be reinstated.

“It appears she does require anti-inflammatory medication and stronger medicines that we are hopeful will quickly bring the eye under control,” he said.

It is hoped Egg Tart can trial next week and return to racing in a fortnight.

Egg Tart was the Epsom’s second elect $5.50 before she was scratched.

Her stablemates Comin’ Through and Tom Melbourne are the new $6.50 joint second favourites in revised markets.

Happy Clapper shortened from $3.10 to $2.70.
