Melbourne’s former champion apprentice Dylan Dunn is set to make his comeback to race riding at Echuca in country Victoria.

Dunn is booked for two rides at Saturday’s Echuca meeting – one for Leon and Troy Corstens and the other for Hawkes Racing – which will be his first races since January last year.

The 2015/16 champion apprentice in Melbourne, Dunn announced his retirement from the saddle in May last year because of weight issues which also affected his health.

With his weight now under control at around 58kg, the 23-year-old made the decision to pursue a comeback to the sport he loves and has been riding work in recent weeks.

He rode in official barrier trials at Wodonga on Monday and returns to race riding now as a senior jockey.

“I’m more motivated than I’ve ever been,” Dunn said.

“My weight is a lot more stable and I feel stronger riding them out to the line, just even in the official trials.

“I think there’s more in store from when I left and I honestly feel I only just scratched the surface when I was riding before.”
