Inquiry

Doomben is on the four-day turnaround on Wednesday after hosting seven metro races on Saturday, when the final two runs on the program were abandoned due to an excessively heavy track. The surface is rated a Soft 7 at the time of writing, with the rail out 7m for the entire circumference; a further 6.5m from Saturday’s racing. Race 1 will jump at 11:57am AEST, with the rescheduled #BNERACES QTIS Three Years Old Handicap to close out the card at 4:38pm.

Best Bet
Race 5 – Gideons @ $7.50

Damien Batters saddles up the talented Gideons in a QTIS 3YO BM68 in what looks a very suitable race for the son of Monashee Mountain. Coming off a last-start second at the Sunshine Coast in a similar race, he looks very well placed here third up at 1050m. Although the gelding has won just two from eight, we can bet with confidence considering both victories have come on rain-affected going, with just one minor placing on a good track. Jimmy Orman will be right on the speed from barrier three, likely to take a sit behind race favourite Ingear and finish over the top of the filly. The $7.50 appeals strongly here.

Next Best
Race 8 – Roman Aureus @ $3.90

Roman Aureus is racing in a rich vein of form this campaign, winning twice and placing three times from five starts. He’s had one run over the 1350m at Doomben two starts ago where he was a strong winner, beating Hail Manhattan and Reus, which subsequently went on to win the Grafton Guineas at the start of this month. The Red Element gelding ran third at his next start behind Stuttering and Euro Belle, jumping out of the ground late to find the placings. He should land in a lovely position from barrier four under Larry Cassidy and be too good for these again.

Best Value
Race 7 – Up Trumpz @ $7

A horse that brings in differing form lines to Wednesday’s card is Joe Cleary’s Up Trumpz. Trained at Queanbeyan, the five-year-old often finds himself running very well in town midweek, which is good enough to measure up here. His last-start fourth behind Two Big Fari was massive, coming from next to last in the straight to be beaten just under two lengths. That gives us plenty of confidence for a race like this, which isn’t an overly strong Open Handicap. He has placed six times from 10 starts on a wet track (10:2-2-2) and should be gifted with a lovely run in transit from barrier five with Jim Byrne aboard. The 4kg drop in weights from last start is hugely beneficial, so we should see him running very well here.
