Doomben racing preview

A monster 10-race card is headed to Doomben on Saturday. The track is rated a Heavy 8 after torrential rain during the week, while the rail is out +6m for the entire circumference. The first field will face the starter at 11:15am AEST, with the last set to run at 5:20pm.

Best BetRace 6 – The Harrovian (#1) $2.60 with Sportsbet

What’s not to love about the big seven-year-old from North Queensland? He’s won his last eight races, including a Townsville Cup, Cairns Cup and Cairns Newmarket before coming to Brisbane and winning first up over Phantom Falcon and Desert Lord. He’s a three-time winner on Soft going and is one from one on Heavy tracks, where he was a 2.75L winner at Cairns under 65.5kg – a monster effort. He’s never won at a mile, but he was beaten 0.1L at his latest attempt at 1600m, so it shouldn’t be an issue at all. The 59kg is a featherweight for this horse, who should land in a lovely spot under Brad Stewart and prove too good again.

Next BestRace 3 – Lyrical Girl (#1) $1.75 with Sportsbet

Another horse who just keeps winning is Tony Gollan’s Lyrical Girl. The four-year-old mare does come up short in the betting, but that’s because she has absolutely bolted in her last three. Last start at the Sunshine Coast, she beat Abdicating – a subsequent winner – by 1.5L, so her form is standing up. She’s a winner over 1100m and has placed multiple times on wet ground, so she should handle the conditions. She’ll likely lead or box seat under Baylee Nothdurft and will take some serious running down.

Best ValueRace 10 – Beaufort Park (#2) $8 with Sportsbet

Beaufort Park has strung three wins together and finds himself in a cracking race here. Three weeks ago he was a tough winner at this track and trip when holding off the fast-finishing All Important, who he meets here again. From the wide alley, apprentice jockey Adin Thompson will push on and try to find a spot just off the pace and look to make it the fourth picket in the fence. The five-year-old gelding is yet to see a Heavy track but is a two-time winner on Soft going, so we expect he will handle it. He has to be a great each-way play in the get-out stakes.
