What | Doomben 10,000 Day |
Where | Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden St, Ascot QLD 4007 |
When | Saturday, May 17, 2025 |
First Race | 11:48am AEST |
The Group 1 Doomben 10,000 headlines a massive nine-race program at Doomben this Saturday afternoon. With more rain forecast on Friday and race day, it appears unlikely that the track will improve from the initial Soft 7 rating. The rail will be in its true position for the entire circuit, while the Doomben races are set to start at 11:48am AEST.
Doomben 10,000 tip: Mazu
Mazu stands out as the top selection in the Doomben 10,000, as the Joseph Pride-trained gelding has a strong record on Soft (11:3-0-1) and Heavy (8:5-1-1) tracks. The son of Maurice returned to form with a dominant win in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes, where he settled behind the speed and finished off strongly. From barrier 10, Rachel King will push forward, allow Mazu to settle in the first six, and gain a cart into the home straight.

Best Bet at Doomben: Sir Delius
Sir Delius will have his first start in Australia for Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott when he competes in the Group 3 JRA Chairman’s Quality Handicap. This four-year-old entire was last seen finishing eighth in the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in France, which is a much higher grade of race than what he will contest here. To put it simply, if Sir Delius turns up in his best form, he will win this race.
Best Bet
Race 6 – #1 Sir Delius (6)
4yo Horse | T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | J: Tim Clark (60kg)
Next Best at Doomben: King Of Thunder
Following somewhat of a failure in the Group 1 Australian Derby, King Of Thunder will drop back in trip to 2000m after a six-week freshen. The John O’Shea & Tom Charlton-trained gelding finished a close third in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes on a wet track, and that form is more than enough to give him a great chance in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate. With Mark Zahra getting legged aboard for his first ride, King Of Thunder will settle in the perfect position from barrier four and be ready to strike when turning for home.
Next Best
Race 9 – #3 King Of Thunder (4)
3yo Gelding | T: John O’Shea & Tom Charlton | J: Mark Zahra (57kg)
Best Value at Doomben: Grafterburners
Grafterburners will return from an eight-week spell with the benefit of a trial victory over 1000m at Doomben. The Kelly Schweida-trained colt finished last preparation with a dominant win in the QTIS Jewel 2YO at the Gold Coast on March 15. At double-figure odds with horse racing bookmakers, Grafterburners has the turn of foot to give himself every chance to return a winner in the Group 2 Spirit Of Boom Classic.
Best Value
Race 5 – #1 Grafterburners (11)
2yo Colt | T: Kelly Schweida | J: Jason Collett (57kg)
