Where Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden St, Ascot QLD 4007
When Saturday, May 24, 2025
First Race 11:43am AEST

The Group 1 Doomben Cup will headline the nine-race card at Doomben this Saturday afternoon, with the first race scheduled to jump at 11:43am AEST. After being rated as a Soft 5 at the time of acceptances, the track is expected to improve into the Good range with fine weather forecast across the weekend. The rail will be in the +2m position for the entire circuit.

Doomben Cup tip: Fawkner Park

Fawkner Park has continued to improve throughout this preparation and appears ready to take on the 2000m at his fifth run this time in for Annabel & Rob Archibald. This son of Zoffany was very good in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes, where he finished second behind Antino, even though he doesn’t enjoy racing on rain-affected tracks. With a firmer track and the rise to 2000m set to suit Fawkner Park, he is a great each-way bet at the +750 on offer with top horse racing bookmakers.

Doomben Cup

Race 8 – #3 Fawkner Park (8)

6yo Gelding | T: Annabel & Rob Archibald | J: Ethan Brown (59kg)

Best Bet at Doomben: Sunrays

Sunrays returned with a runner-up finish behind the smart Beadman at the Gold Coast, where the Kelly Schweida-trained filly was well-backed before the race but couldn’t go with the winner. The daughter of Hellbent finished 8.3 lengths off the winner on that day, but she defeated the rest of the field by 1.8 lengths in dominant fashion. Tommy Berry can settle Sunrays in the one-one position from barrier three, and if she produces a similar finish to last start, she will go one better.

Best Bet

Race 3 – #1 Sunrays (6)

2yo Filly | T: Kelly Schweida | J: Tommy Berry (56.5kg)

Next Best at Doomben: War Machine

Following his dominant victory over 1400m in a BM100 at Caulfield, War Machine will head to Queensland to compete in the Group 3 BRC Sprint over 1350m. The Ben, Will & JD Hayes-trained gelding showed a brilliant turn of foot to finish over the top of his rivals and claim a 1.3-length win. With Blake Shinn getting legged aboard for the ride, he will have War Machine settled in the first six, find a back to follow around the home turn, and let him unleash with a booming finish.

Next Best

Race 9 – #3 War Machine (6)

4yo Gelding | T: Ben, Will & JD Hayes | J: Blake Shinn (56.5kg)

Best Value at Doomben: Torabella

Torabella will return to Doomben, where the Tony Gollan-trained mare has won four of her five starts, with three of those wins being at the 1600m journey. This daughter of Toronado is yet to race in ideal conditions this preparation, after being made to work too hard from a wide barrier, and then she didn’t enjoy a heavy track last start. With little to no other speed influences engaged in this contest, Torobella gets a great chance to win at big odds with BlondeBet.

Best Value

Race 6 – #13 Torabella (3)

4yo Mare | T: Tony Gollan | J: Craig Williams (55.5kg)
