Vanna Girl at Doomben

A massive 10-race program is scheduled for Doomben Racecourse on Wednesday, kicking off at 11:23am AEST. It’ll be fine and sunny in Brisbane, with a Good 4 surface predicted. The rail goes out 11m for the entire circumference of the course, which could add an advantage to those on speed.

Best Bet
Race 5 – Doctor Zous @ $2.10

Darryl Hansen’s Doctor Zous makes his return to the track on Wednesday in his first run since a narrow second to the talented Grey Missile at the Sunshine Coast in the back end of January. The Zoustar gelding won a trial last week over 850m beating home Let’s Cheer Again, which won at Kilcoy on Monday. The 4yo will be piloted by Dan Griffin for the first time and will have to carry 61.5kg for his first-up assignment. Drawn in barrier 10, Griffin will go forward and make every post a winner on a horse that races well when fresh. The blinkers come off the gelding for the first time on Wednesday, which is worth noting. Doctor Zous should be too good for them here.

Next Best
Race 1 – Playthefield @ $2.40

How Playthefield hasn’t won his maiden yet is beyond us here at HorseBetting.com.au, but Stu Kendrick’s Sepoy gelding strikes a winnable race here first up. The 3yo has placed six times from seven starts, with his only non-placing a credible fourth behind the very smart Vanna Girl. While he could be dubbed a non-winner, he did win a trial seven days ago by over a length to suggest he is ready to go first up. There looks to be plenty of speed in the race, so from barrier seven Jake Bayliss should settle towards the rear and look to finish over the top of them. He’s had two looks around Doomben for two seconds, which will be a help considering his main rival, Tracy May, has never run at the track. That horse is also accepted for Race 6. It’s a real race in two in the opener, but Playthefield should be good enough to break through for his first win.

Best Value
Race 8 – Own Sweet Way @ $5.50

Nat McCall saddles up her 5yo gelding, Own Sweet Way, in Race 8 on Wednesday in a 2070m Benchmark 65. Drawn the inside, 2kg-claiming apprentice Adin Thompson will roll forward and box seat to give the Iffraaj gelding every chance in the straight at what looks a suitable distance. Coming off a last-start fifth behind Enterprise Jack over the mile bodes well for this race, with Stardome (3rd) winning on Saturday at Eagle Farm to frank the form. Own Sweet Way should get plenty of favours and run a great race at the each-way quote.
