THE Hayes and Daberning-trained Derryn has made it two wins from three starts this preparation in Sydney after taking out the Arrowfield Stakes at Randwick.

Under a patient ride from Mark Zahra, the three-year-old was taken to the outside at the ideal time to swamp Global Glamour ($1.80 at WilliamHill.com.au) on the line to deliver a $9.50 dividend to Crownbet.com.au clients.

John O’Shea star Impending held on well to claim third and return $2.40 at Sportsbet.com.au.

The winning jockey said the perfect run in transit presented itself for his elect and it unleashed at the ideal time to take out the race.

“We just had a nice run,” Mark Zahra said.

“We were wide with cover and was able to sort of just creep around the bend, pull him out up the rise and away he went, he let down nicely.”

Global Glamour looked to have the race run in the latter stages of the race, and Kerrin McEvoy thought the race was his entering the final 200m.

“Good effort by her, she obviously had the freshen up and in today’s race I thought I was the winner but took a nice colt to get by me,” McEvoy said.

The jockey now believes the Waterhouse-trained star will take a well-earned spell from the track.

“She has done a marvellous effort, so will have a break now and come back in the spring.”

The win for Derryn was on the back of a short turnaround from last week’s TJ Smith Stakes run, and trainer David Hayes said the soft track helped the three-year-old get through the ground on day two of The Championships.

“A really great win. Really revelled in the conditions,” Hayes said.

“They back up so well off soft ground.

“He’s a horse that likes the jar out of the ground, so you have got to take advantage of it when you get it, and he’s one of the few here that really loves the ground.”

After a great preparation in Sydney over the autumn, the team will look to target races closer to its Victorian base in the near future.

Hayes believes the horse has the ability to win one of the key Melbourne races of 2017.

“I just think this horse will be perfect for a Newmarket or something like that.

“He’s never been that far off the Group Ones of his own age, so maybe the Newmarket next year.”
