Debonairly sprints best in Listed Woodlands Stakes

Classy filly Debonairly was too good for them in the Woodlands Stakes at Scone for trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott

THE punters struck early at Scone with Osark in the Star Turn Handicap and it continued on to the Segenhoe Stud Woodlands Stakes where Debonairly was successful.

The Waterhouse/Bott-trained two-year-old was looking to rebound for punters after being beaten as the short favourite last start and the late money came for the talented filly.

After setting around the $4 mark throughout the week, the daughter of Snitzel was crunched late into $3.60 at WilliamHill.com.au and the money was well-placed.

Jockey Tommy Berry settled Debonairly into a handy position behind the speed and when the gaps opened up in the straight, it was too good for the well-favoured Almanzor which came with a run, but weakened late to finish outside of the placings.

Co-trainer Adrian Bott has always believed in the two-year-old, which had a run in Queensland in the B.J. McLachlan at Eagle Farm second up.

“She’s always been a classy filly for us, she’s shown that from day one, right from her debut,” Bott said.

“She went up to Queensland early on, but she was a little bit immature at that point in time so we’ve given her plenty of time and this was always a nice race to target for her.”

Bott said the promising two-year-old still has plenty of learning to do after it noticeably shifted out under pressure nearing the line.

“She’s still learning. As you saw late in the piece she just wanted to drift out, so we’ve got a little bit of improvement there, but she’s certainly a nice filly for us going forward,” Bott said.

Berry tracked the speed beautifully and given what the filly had shown when winning at Warwick Farm on debut and against two starts back at Newcastle, it was always going to be tough to beat in the run to the line.

“It worked out perfectly. She put herself right on the speed,” Bott said. “One wanted to roll forward from the outside, so Tommy let her go forward and was able to get a nice easy run up the inside on the fence.

“It worked out nicely for her.”

Lipizzan scored an upset result in second place after surviving a protest lodged by the connections of Almanzora. It paid over $5 for the place, along with third placegetter I Am Excited which boosted trifecta payouts.

Race favourite Almanzora looked to have every chance in the straight, but it didn’t show the same turn-of-foot that it displayed at the trials in preparation for this run.
