Darren Weir continues dominance with Zanteco

CHAMPION trainer Darren Weir has a great record in the Brendan Drechsler Hurdle and that dominance continued on Sunday with Zanteco.

Considered the second-elect out of the Weir stable, Zanteco ($3.20 at Crownbet) was too strong for its rivals in the $100,000 Bendigo co-feature, holding out King Of Dudes and stablemate Gingerboy late.

Jockey Jamie Mott positioned the son of Zabeel just off the pace which was set by Gingerboy in its usual front-running style, but Mott piled the pressure on nearing the home turn and Gingerboy was unable to respond. King Of Dudes launched a claim late, but it was Zanteco which held the edge near the post.

“We had a lovely run,” Mott said.

“I’ve always liked this horse. He always showed a good bit of promise and it was good to get on him today.”

Gingerboy had an uncontested lead throughout and it appeared to be travelling as they approached the home turn, but Mott had plenty of horse underneath him and he made sure the $1.90 favourite didn’t get out of sight.

“I didn’t want Gingerboy to zip off so I tried to get on terms and was full of running,” Mott said. “He was kinda on empty (near the line) but at the same time he was waiting for them as well.”

The seven-year-old had won only one hurdle race prior to winning on Sunday. The seven-year-old broke maiden status at Ballarat in May and it was able to turn the tables on the likes of Gold Medals which finished 10.15 lengths in front of Zanteco last start.
