If finishing a narrow second in the Melbourne Cup wasn’t bad enough, Kerrin McEvoy’s afternoon got even worse in the stewards’ room.

The jockey was fined $50,000 and suspended for 13 meetings for breaching the whip rules on Tiger Moth, striking the horse more than 21 times in total.

McEvoy pleaded guilty and will begin his penalty after he rides at the VRC Oaks meeting at Flemington on Thursday where his mounts include Tyche Goddess in the Group One race.

He will be free to return to the saddle on November 15.

Tiger Moth was beaten a long neck by Twilight Payment in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup, a race McEvoy was striving to win for the fourth time following victories aboard Brew (2000), Almandin (2016) and Cross Counter (2018).
