Cummings aims to emulate Slipper history
James Cummings will saddle up his first Golden Slipper runner 50 years after his legendary grandfather Bart won the race with his debut starter.
Bart was 38 when won he his first of four Slippers with Storm Queen in 1966.
Cummings, 28, will look to capture the $3.5 million race at his first attempt and he will be 10 years younger than his grandfather was when he pulled off the training feat.
Cummings says the horse he is preparing for the Slipper, Good Standing, is right where he wants him – flying under the radar.
“He’s not too often mentioned by opposing rival trainers and jockeys,” Cummings said.
“He’s sufficiently under the radar but look who’s riding him – it speaks volumes.”
Hugh Bowman takes the ride with Cummings rating him as Australia’s best jockey.
“Hugh thinks the world of the horse,” Cummings said.
“He’s ridden him first-up, he rode him in both his trials this preparation and he already has a bit of affinity with the horse.
“It makes it an important combination.”
Cummings said Good Standing, who won the Skyline Stakes at his last start, had gate speed and a strong finish on his side.
