2020 Craven Plate betting preview
The Group 3 Craven Plate over 2000m has attracted a high-class field at Royal Randwick. Star Of The Seas will start the favourite ahead of Vanna Girl and Quintessa in what looks to be a fairly slowly run affair. Think It Over, Quintessa and The Candy Man will likely run up on speed, while Star Of The Seas and Vanna Girl will settle around midfield.
Down on the minimum, Queensland mare Vanna Girl looks very hard to beat up to 2000m. She never got into it in the Epsom after drifting to back to near last from barrier 14, so the decent draw here should see her stalking the favourite and finishing over the top of them. Kerrin McEvoy will take the ride and give the mare every chance. She was dominant in this year’s Queensland Carnival, so she can win this if she brings some of that form to Sydney.
Star Of The Seas has firmed into even-money favouritism since the scratching of Avilius on Wednesday night and will take some serious beating. He was narrowly beaten by Verry Elleegant in the Winx Stakes before being narrowly beaten again by Kolding, which is solid form for this. Up to 2000m on a dry track and under the top weight is our query given he has never won past a mile, but he certainly brings the Group 1 form to the races in this.
Rondinella looks the value in the race after finishing down the track in the Metropolitan Handicap last start. She drops back to 2000m, which we think will suit, and she should be able to run on given she’ll likely be last from gate 12. Rachel King stays on board for John O’Shea and will look to finish over the top of them. The blinkers back on is a big plus for the Ocean Park mare.
