Cradle Me gives new owners an immediate thrill

CRADLE Me upset the highly-favoured Ghisoni at the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The seven-year-old mare was a recent $300,000 purchase for Aquis Farm and the dividends paid off immediately.

Hong Kong-based jockey Zac Purton gave Cradle Me a sweet inside run in the straight and the horse was good enough to take advantage of a free run in the last 100 metres.

“She was always going to be hard to beat the way she travelled and it was just a matter of getting some luck,” Purton said.

Late money came for the mare and it closed at $6.50 with Sportsbet. Race-favourite Ghisoni touched $1.60 at one stage in the betting, but it drifted significantly to $1.90 at post time. The drift was warranted as the star Godolphin filly missed the jump, but looked to have its chance.

Jockey James McDonald produced the three-year-old around the home turn, but the damage was done in the barriers.

“She lost it at the start when she was slow to go and then she was caught deep the whole way,” McDonald said.

Cradle Me finished second behind Ghisoni last start in the Glenlogan Park Stakes at Doomben and trainer David Pfieffer is now considering a start in the Group 1 Tattersalls Tiara in two weeks time.

“She cost her original owners $28,000 at a breeze up sale and she won 10 races and $563,000 for them,” Pfieffer said.

“They were thrilled to get $300,000 for her at the sales and now Aquis have picked up nearly half that for Cradle Me’s win today.

“She isn’t nominated for the Tatts Tiara in a fortnight, but we might have to see about a late nomination. I will speak with Aquis tonight to see what they want to do.”

Artistry turned its form around to finish second for Peter and Paul Snowden with the Luke Oliver-trained visitor Jessy Belle running well for third.
