Consolation Valley win for Sweet Sherry

A stakes race win at Moonee Valley was some minor consolation for the connections of Sweet Sherry missing a start in the Thousand Guineas.

Sweet Sherry spiked a temperature before an important lead-up race to the Thousand Guineas which disrupted her campaign.

Having her first start since early September, Sweet Sherry took out the Crockett Stakes on Saturday.

Ridden by Steven Arnold, Sweet Sherry was a well supported $4 favourite before scoring by a long-head from Prompt Response ($9) with Overstep ($9.50) a neck away third.

Co-trainer Troy Corstens said he was disappointed Sweet Sherry missed the Thousand Guineas as she’s a filly he has a lot of faith in.

“I really thought we could win the Thousand Guineas,” Corstens said.

“You wake up at 2.30 every morning for these moments and it was really gut wrenching when the plan went astray.

“She got a high temp which was a reaction to an antibiotic.

“It was touch and go whether we took her to hospital for a while.

“Nine times out of 10 they get tipped out. It usually takes them two weeks to get over it but she got over it pretty quickly.”

The Corstens team has plans to run Sweet Sherry in a 1400m Listed race at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day before going on to the Sandown Guineas on November 12.
