Conchita wins tough battle at Randwick

Conchita has righted the wrong which cost her a Magic Millions start earlier this year with a hard-fought victory at Randwick.

After winning on debut in October, the Paul Perry-trained filly virtually took no part in the Wyong lead-up to the Magic Millions a few weeks later.

The saddle slipped and she was found to be mildly lame after that race and Perry took his time with the two-year-old.

“They couldn’t really find anything wrong with her,” Perry said.

“She had a spell and she trialled terrifically a couple of weeks ago.

“She is a very tough filly and when she gets over further I think she will be even better.”

Star Crossed ($8) led Conchita ($6) in the two-year-old race on Saturday, but the latter’s jockey Thomas Huet said he always felt he had his rival’s measure and the filly went to the line with a long head to spare.

“I knew I would beat him,” Huet said.

“They were locked together but then she just gave a bit more.”

The $5 pre-race favourite Hair Trigger lived up to his name when he reared up in the barrier and hit his head, prompting his withdrawal.

His trainer James Cummings said he would take him back to the barrier trials before he raced again.
