Comeback queen Kayla Nisbet hoping to overcome latest setback

Kayla Nisbet

THE trials and tribulations a jockey endures throughout their career should never be underestimated and for talented rider Kayla Nisbet, just getting back in the saddle is a step in the right direction.

Nisbet has had her fair share of setbacks and she is still only 22 years old. In 2014 she took a five-month sabbatical after breaking her foot and wrist, which subsequently left her with problems maintaining her riding weight. Only two months after making a comeback to riding, Nisbet suffered a broken tibia which kept her out for another three months.

Broken bones are nothing new for jockeys – they heal with time, but Nisbet’s latest health scare was far more worrying for the young hoop.

Nisbet was diagnosed with epilepsy soon after she rode back-to-back winners at Sapphire Coast in June this year, but after seeing a specialist in Sydney and with the aid of medication, Nisbet is showing positive signs to making a recovery.

Horsebetting.com.au talked with Kayla Nisbet who is hoping to stay healthy enough to make a return to riding in December.

“I’m really looking forward to race riding again. This time last year I was just making a comeback from a broken leg, so I felt like I hadn’t been back riding long before this hiccup,” Nisbet said.

“As long as I don’t have another seizure by December, I’ll be back riding then and my first meeting back will be somewhere in New South Wales.”

Nisbet is an accomplished winner of 200 races throughout Australia which included 20 winners for top Victorian trainer David Hayes, but she knows it won’t be easy to pick up where she left off last season.

“It’s always hard to get going after time off, so I’m obviously hoping to come back riding winners straight away, but I’m sure it’ll take a few months to get back in the swing of things,” she said.

Having ridden in over 200 races for her father John, Kayla is very much a family-orientated rider who has had great success riding for the family. Nisbet has recorded 27 wins and 51 placings for John Nisbet and looks forward to continuing that success.

“I ride a lot for my dad and his partner Ron Weston and their horses are going well at the moment, so I’ll be looking forward to getting back and riding for them,” Nisbet said.

Nisbet’s manager, Dean Walsh, is pleased with how she is progressing and he confirmed that a return to riding is expected for December.

“A return to the saddle is likely towards the end of December,” Walsh said.

“Kayla is in great spirits and has had terrific support from all around her.

“Word is she will be an extremely experienced strapper by the time she makes it back race riding.”
