Chiavari set to make amends at Caulfield

Trainer Nick Harnett has Chiavari racing in great form and believes the mare should be shooting for a winning hat-trick at Caulfield.

After landing her first city win at Moonee Valley last month, Chiavari went within a neck of landing back-to-back victories at Caulfield two weeks ago.

On Saturday Chiavari returns to Caulfield to contest the Mypunter.com. Handicap in which she will be ridden by Damien Oliver who returns to city racing for the first time since June 25.

“She’s going real well and with a bit of luck she could have won last start,” Harnett said.

“If she had the run the winner had, I think she would have gone very close.

“She’s good, she’s trained on well but has drawn a poor barrier.

“Anyway that’s Ollie’s problem now but he’s ridden her a few times now and knows her well.”

Chiavari has shown herself to be a model of consistency with a win and three second placings from her four starts this campaign which kicked off in May.

She showed she was not far from black type company when fifth in Group Three company at Caulfield during her autumn campaign.

Harnett said he would consider looking at a return to better mares company in the coming months, especially if the tracks were soft.

“She seems best with a little bit of give in the ground but she handles all types of going,” Harnett said.

“We’ll see how she comes through Saturday’s run and work it out from there.

“She’s a more mature mare and if she happened to get the right run she might be up to one of those better class races.”

Chiavari shares the second line in first markets for Saturday’s race at $7.50 with Kansas Sunflower behind the $3.30 favourite Beirut.
