Cheekily named Pel wins at Muswellbrook
PEL may not go on to greatness throughout her career, but the Pat Farrell-trained filly can claim rights to being the best-named winner at Muswellbrook on Tuesday.
Trained by Pat Farrell, who also co-owns the three-year-old, the bonny bay is named after Cardinal George Pell and is by all conquering sire I Am Invincible.
Despite her owners forgetting the additional ‘L’ when it came time to naming their youngster, the subtle dig did not go unnoticed as Farrell celebrated the victory post-race.

Starting from barrier seven, Pel settled just behind the leading duo Swift Reply and Kenny Succeed, before hooking to the centre of the track around the home turn and sprinting clear to score by 2.11 lengths over Roulette Belle, with Sucker rounding out the trifecta back in third.
It was a welcome return to the winner’s list for Pel which failed at Dubbo last start when met with an unsuitable surface.
“It was a nice win – we needed it,” Farrell told Horse Betting.
“We came here confident today – her last start was on a hard track at Dubbo and she just couldn’t stretch out properly – she has had a few issues with her knees and just jarred up a bit. She was suited by the track here today and she won well.”
Farrell purchased Pel as a weanling and has now guided her to three wins and a third from 10 starts. With two wins and a placing at her four most recent runs, Farrell commented it was good to see Pel start to mature into a handy race horse.
“You go away with a lot of disappointments on race day, so its great to have her put it together.
“The main thing now is that she can continue on from here – if she stays sound she is home.”
While she is in form, Pel is now likely to target a similar race at Tamworth.
