2020 Chatham Stakes betting preview

The Group 3 Chatham Stakes is one of the feature events on the nine-race card at Flemington on Saturday. A field of nine has been accepted to do battle for the $200,000 prize pool, with 2019 winner Reykjavik going around as the top weight in this year’s edition. The Chatham Stakes is set to jump at 1:35pm AEDT.

#1 Reykjavik (2)

The 2019 winner of the Chatham Stakes drops back in grade after competing in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and Toorak Handicap at Group 1 level. If he can run up to the form that saw him finish a length and a half off Behemoth in the Sir Rupert Clarke, he should be fighting out the finish here. He seemed to get too far back in the Toorak but wasn’t beaten far in the process, and he will appreciate dropping back to Group 3 level.

#2 Haripour (1)

Emma Church and John Allen will be hoping the first-up 10th in the Benalla Cup a fortnight ago was just a complete forgive run. He needs to overturn a near 10-length defeat to Harlech, who is well fancied here in the Chatham Stakes betting markets. This looks to be a step too far for Haripour at this stage of his career, even though he has won twice in four second-up runs.

#3 Harlech (3)

The ex-Kiwi galloper now with Mike Moroney appreciated dropping back out of two Group 1 races to take out the Benalla Cup in fine style a fortnight ago. He had his colours lowered in the Toorak Handicap after racing keenly throughout and didn’t feature the start prior in the Sir Rupert Clarke despite not being beaten far. He gets 2.5kg off his back after that victory in the Benalla Cup and will be there or thereabouts when the whips are cracking.

#4 Morrissy (5)

It has been a long campaign for Leon and Troy Corstens’ 5YO stallion, who has been racing since April with well-spaced runs. He was pipped on the line by Wild Planet in the Moonga Stakes three weeks ago when going around at big odds and looks to meet an easier task here. Prior to that, he was swamped late by star duo Windstorm and Buffalo River in the shadows of the winning post. He maps to be just off the leaders’ heels and looks hard to hold out.

#5 Riddle Me That (9)

Matt Laurie’s 4YO gelding was never in the race during the Crystal Mile at The Valley on Cox Plate Day. Prior to that, he took out the Listed Paris Lane Stakes at Flemington in a driving go when holding out proven Group performers in Iconoclasm and Best Of Days. While that was a decent run and four of his five career wins have been on good tracks, he’s hard to entertain here.

#6 Bold Star (4)

Gordon Richards’ 5YO gelding is on the quick seven-day backup after finishing a close third in the Linlithgow Stakes on Derby Day. He has been super consistent this campaign and wasn’t beaten far in the Moir Stakes at The Valley three starts ago. He did his best work late in that run, so he should be fighting out the finish as he steps up to 1400m. The in-form Jamie Kah gets on board for the first time, and they should get a gun run in transit for barrier four.

#7 Sansom (6)

The in-form Phillip Stokes will saddle up this last-start winner, who steps up to 1400m for the first time since August last year. A fortnight ago at The Valley, he was a tough on-speed winner who took over at the 200m mark and kicked clear on a night where it was beneficial to be up on the pace. He’s drawn to settle close to the speed, and if he can replicate the form at The Valley and his consistent performances during the winter, then he’s a must for exotics.

#8 Morvada (7)

Peter Jolly and Zac Spain will look to build on the consistent campaign this 7YO gelding has been putting together. He will need to overturn a 2.5-length defeat to Morrissy from when they clashed in the Moonga Stakes three weeks ago and meets his rival 2.5kg better in the weights. He was quite keen throughout the race in the Moonga Stakes, and that looked to be detrimental to his chances there, but he could be nice value for exotics if he settles better here.

#9 Fox Hall (8)

Fox Hall is on a quick four-day backup after being well defeated on Melbourne Cup Day in a BM90. The McEvoy runner will most likely be scratched from here, but it would be hard to entertain him anyway. Despite winning two starts ago at Morphettville, it’s been a disappointing campaign overall.
