Change of scenery helps Exospheric become Cup chance

Exospheric winning in Europe before being transferred to the Freedman stables

EUROPEAN import Exospheric was impressive in running third in the Caulfield Cup and co-trainer Lee Freedman believes a change in scenery helped.

The five-year-old had been less than impressive in its work since joining the Freedman stables, but the change of location to the Mornington Peninsula has turned the horse into a Melbourne Cup-winning hope.

“The best move was to be able to move him from Werribee to Pinecliff and he’s loving the quieter environment and doing very well,” Freedman said.

“I’m happy with his condition – he lost a lot of weight in the Caulfield Cup run, but he’s put it all back.

“His work at Pinecliff last Wednesday was good and he came right away from his partner at the finish.”

Exospheric finished 3.75 lengths behind Jameka in the Caulfield Cup, but that was its first run in two months and the $21 chance at CrownBet could be the underrated Cup runner.

“He was a very strong finisher in the Caulfield Cup which makes you think he will get the two miles but you are never really certain.” Freedman said.

Stablemate Our Ivanhowe hasn’t attracted any attention in the betting at $51, but there is positively in the camp for the seven-year-old.

“The plan was always to give him three runs going into the (Melbourne) Cup and I’ve been pleased with him. Dwayne (Dunn) admitted that he would have been closer in the Caulfield Cup with a more positive ride.” Freedman said.

“I think he’s in very good form and he’s more seasoned than Exospheric at this stage.

“I think he’ll run a great race on Tuesday but might need it a bit softer to be able to win but saying that it was firm last year and he was unlucky.”
