Change of luck due for promising mare Margot
CONNECTIONS of Margot are hoping a home-track trial success might be the catalyst for a turnaround in fortunes for the highly touted galloper.
The promising mare won its 1000m open heat in Heavy 11 going at Foxton on Tuesday in the hands of Rosie Myers, and trainer Suzy Gordon is now hoping for ideal conditions to assist the process.
“Rosie said she hated the track, she definitely needs it Good to Dead,” Gordon said.
“The reason I trialled her was that I’m hoping the Hawke’s Bay track will come back to Dead on Saturday week and then she can run in the Rating 65 over 1400m. She’s ready to go.”
Margot gave a good account of itself on debut last season when she finished eighth and less than four lengths from the winner Honey Rider in the Group Three Gold Trail Stakes at Hastings.
Following a subsequent fifth the horse was found to be suffering from a virus and after a break she won a maiden at Woodville in February.
Gordon is hoping the persist injury problems are now behind the horse.
“We’ve had terrible problems with her feet and that’s what’s held us up for so long,” the trainer said.
“It’s been frustrating, but she’s finally right now.”
In the meantime, Margot’s stablemate Play The Field looks a decent chance to open its account in the Merrylees Hotel Maiden at Woodville on Thursday. The Stravinsky four-year-old has placed in two of her three starts.
“Her work since her last start has been a lot better,” Gordon said.
“She’s not a very big mare, but neither was her mother and she won seven.”
