Champ Elect ready to boost Munce’s winter

A good spell has Champ Elect ready to give trainer Chris Munce another major winter carnival hope when she returns to metropolitan racing at Doomben.

Champ Elect was one of the stars of the early two-year-old races last season, winning the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes.

But she had only two runs last winter before Munce sent her for a long spell.

“She ran on that terrible track at Eagle Farm in the Sires’ Produce. It really took it out of her,” Munce said.

“There was nothing wrong with her other than wear from the hard run. So we decided to give her a really long spell with this winter in mind.”

Champ Elect showed the rest had done wonders with an easy first-up win at the Sunshine Coast last Sunday week.

Munce had no hesitation bringing Champ Elect straight back to city class in the Japan Racing Association Plate (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday.

“I think she is a class act and a very good galloper in the making. I still say she would have gone close to winning a Magic Millions Classic if she had drawn a decent barrier.”

Munce is looking at the Queensland Guineas and Sunshine Coast Guineas as targets for Champ Elect.
