Saturday racing tips for Caulfield Stakes
The 2000m Group 1 Caulfield Stakes has attracted just the six runners, with all bar Levendi coming out of the Underwood Stakes a fortnight ago. Russian Camelot is the $1.55 favourite ahead of Arcadia Queen and Humidor, who are the only other runners in single figures. Levendi and Gailo Chop should lead, while Russian Camelot will have the run of the race.
Russian Camelot is the next big thing in Australian racing as he looks to win his third Group 1 in what will be 12 months to the day since he made his debut. It took the likes of Winx, So You Think and Black Caviar over 500 days to win three of the highest honours, and he could be doing it at just his eighth start. He was a dominant winner of the Underwood last time out at this track and will enjoy the rise to 2000m here. From barrier four, Damien Oliver will settle wherever the horse is comfortable and be too good for them. He has 2.5kg less than four of his rivals and 0.5kg less than Arcadia Queen, which is supremely beneficial. This should be a case of ‘just wins’.
Humidor finished second to Russian Camelot last start, and we think he can again here. He looks to be back in the form of his life after he won the Feehan Stakes first up and made Arcadia Queen look like she was glued to the rail last start when he went past her. Barrier one will allow Craig Williams to box seat and make his run at the same time as the favourite, giving him every chance to place. He looks the best of a bad bunch outside of the obvious.
Rank outsider Levendi can be respected here. The 2018 ATC Derby winner hasn’t won since then, but he did place at Moonee Valley last start in the Group 3 JRA Cup over this distance. He finished half a length in front of Mirage Dancer, who subsequently won the Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap last weekend. He has never missed the place in three attempts at 2000m but has also never fired a shot at Caulfield, which is come concern. There will be no third dividend, but he can be included in trifectas and first fours.
