Caulfield hosts its first meeting in the new racing season and is headlined by the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes. The track is rated a Soft 6, with the rail out 9m for the entire circuit. Race 1 is set to jump at 12:10pm AEST, and the feature at 4:35pm.

Race 5 – Hydro Star @ $3 Sportsbet
Hydro Star worked his way into thousands of blackbooks around the country with his bullish win on debut at Sandown on July 22. He was the hype horse of the afternoon and duly saluted by two lengths over the 1000m journey. Getting back in the run, Jamie Mott bided his time before pressing the button in the straight to go right on by. The three-year-old colt looks a lovely type by in-form sire Headwater, and we expect him to progress nicely through the grades. This is a much tougher race, the Group 3 Vain Stakes, with the likes of Rulership, Ranting and Larimer Street, but we believe Hydro Star will be too sharp for them over the 1100m journey. Mott will get back again from the awkward alley and be too good for them.
Race 6 – Parlophone @ $2.40 Sportsbet
We think we can find the winner of both 3yo Group 3 races on Saturday with Hydro Star and then Parlophone in the fillies’ edition, the Quezette Stakes. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr prospect has been brilliant in two runs this campaign, winning both in very impressive fashion. She debuted back on New Year’s Day and was beaten 20 lengths before running second to Personal 18 days later. She was put away after that and has won two in a row including the Listed Lightning Stakes at Morphettville by three lengths last start. She is a winner on a heavy track at Sandown, so she will handle the conditions just fine. Damien Oliver will ride from barrier six and settle midfield on the I Am Invincible filly before making her run in the straight to finish over the top of them. On face value, she looks a budding star who could be very hard to beat something like the Thousand Guineas later in the spring.
Race 7 – Jungle Edge @ $8 Sportsbet
Popular mudlark Jungle Edge finds the conditions he needs on Saturday, as not one of his 19 career wins has come on a good surface. Two starts back he beat a similar field in the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes before failing in the Bletchingly on a dry track. Jade Darose retains the ride and will put the gelding up on the speed with proven Group 1 runners Age Of Chivalry and Begood Toya Mother resuming. He will have to overcome the big weight of 62kg, but he has shown time and time again that he is tough enough to handle it. We can expect him to firm if the forecasted rain hits Caulfield in the next 24-48 hours.
