Caulfield racing tips & odds – Saturday, 26 September 2020

The Chosen One

It’s Underwood Stakes Day at Caulfield, where a nine-race card is set down for judgement this weekend. With quality races all throughout the card, this is bound to be the best meeting of the spring so far. The track was a Good 4 on Friday morning, but heavy rain around Melbourne should lead to a downgrade by Saturday afternoon.

We build nicely throughout the early part of the card before the preludes for the Caulfield Guineas and Thousand Guineas come up in Race 6 and 7 respectively. Flying Award and Cambourne head the market in the former race, while Instant Celebrity and Night Raid are hard to split in the latter. The two preludes will give punters a better read of the Group 1 races in a fortnight.

However, the main draw comes up in Race 8 in the Underwood Stakes, where Russian Camelot has come up an odds-on favourite despite competition from proven Group 1 gallopers Arcadia Dancer, Mr Quickie and Humidor.

The first race jumps at 12:45pm AEST, while the rail is out 6m for the entire circuit.

Saturday racing tips for Caulfield

Best BetRace 8 – Russian Camelot Get the best odds

Danny O’Brien’s star galloper was arguably the most talked about runner-up in recent history when returning in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington a fortnight ago. He was four wide the trip and probably should have won even with the tougher run, but he was beaten a neck by a proven Group 1 horse over a mile in Fierce Impact. He will appreciate the extra 200m as he builds towards the Melbourne Cup run in six weeks. Even though all of these are proven Group 1 runners, this guy may prove too classy no matter the run he gets.

Next BestRace 1 – How Womantic Get the best odds

How Womantic has five wins from six career starts and was a gutsy all-the-way winner last time out at The Valley when holding on in a four-way finish. She drops back 100m to the 1100m, but that shouldn’t deter punters as she won both her previous starts at the distance quite impressively. She will look to go forward again and may prove hard to catch with a nice kick at the 200m mark.

Best ValueRace 3 – Ghodeleine Get the best odds

Ghodeleine was beaten home by the handy Shandy in both of her last two starts, and a win doesn’t look too far away. She did beat home Skyman, who goes around in this as a second favourite, so we are more than happy to take a nice each-way price here. The rain will only benefit this 6YO mare. Jamie Kah should be able to go back in the field and have the last look at them late.
