Caulfield Cup-winning hoop cops suspension

Pat Cosgrave’s winning ride in the $5 million Caulfield Cup has also resulted in a suspension for the visiting jockey.

Cosgrave guided the Saeed bin Suroor-trained Best Solution to a memorable win in Saturday’s Group One race in Melbourne but stewards later charged him with careless riding.

Cosgrave pleaded guilty to shifting in near the 1800m on Best Solution, tightening the running of Japanese horse Chestnut Coat.

The 11-meeting ban begins immediately, meaning he will miss the ride on the Aidan O’Brien-trained Fleet Review in Friday night’s Group One Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley.

He can return to riding on October 31 and has riding commitments in Dubai before returning to Melbourne to partner Best Solution in the Melbourne Cup.

Japanese apprentice Ryusei Sakai was also suspended for 11 meetings after pleading guilty to careless riding at the same stage of the Caulfield Cup aboard Sole Power.

Jordan Childs was also hit with a careless riding ban from an earlier race on the program.

Childs had deferred a suspension incurred last Saturday until after the Caulfield Cup meeting so his back-to-back bans mean he will miss next Saturday’s Cox Plate program.

He can return the day before the Victoria Derby meeting at Flemington where he is set to ride star colt Written By in the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes.
