Midweek Tips

CANTERBURY hosts a quality seven-race card this Wednesday and we have form and free tips for every race.

The midweek card features plenty of great racing action, including the Ranvet 3YO where some talented up-and-coming types are out to impress.

The first race starts with the Rewards Handicap at 1.45pm and punters can start the day off right with a CrownBet.com.au Wednesday special.

Race 1 – Tab Rewards 3YO Handicap (1550m)

Silent Warrior has been close in all five career runs and it’s just a matter of time before it breaks through. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt finished third at Kembla Grange last start and has placed in all five of its career runs. It has drawn awkwardly in this, but respect.

Chris Waller lines up Egg Tart which has run two solid races to date. The three-year-old daughter of Sebring finished third behind Flow last start at Warwick Farm and that form looks tidy for this. Drawn well and the in-form Kerrin McEvoy rides.

Race 2 – Schweppes Maiden 3YO Plate (1200m)

The John O’Shea stable should always be respected and Armet should be well-favoured in this. The three-year-old by Helmut ran a narrow second on debut before disappointing on a soft track at Beaumont last start. Plenty of improvement is expected now and the inside barrier will help.

Harper’s Choice is a smart type from the Gerald Ryan stables which has form in much harder races. The Street Cry colt finished second behind Melbourne spring carnival winner Morton’s Fork and it backed that up with a solid effort at Rosehill. It hasn’t raced since July, so it will improve with the run, but it looks a nice type for maiden grade.

Race 3 – Tab Plate Maiden (1200m)

Loveletter is on debut for John Thompson and it should attract plenty of support in the betting. The filly by Encosta de Lago is a well-bred type with strong connections and Hugh Bowman is a key booking. Faces some capable opposition here, but consider for the win.

Peaceful Sea finished off well for fifth on debut at Canterbury and another solid run is expected. The James Cummings-trained filly is owned by Coolmore and with that run under its belt, it should be in for a nice summer campaign. Drawn in barrier nine which isn’t ideal, but it should be running on.

Race 4 – Theraces Handicap (1900m)

Bella Galeano is a capable stayer which hasn’t been able to show its best recently. The Chris Waller-trained mare is a lightly-tried six-year-old which has won two from 13 starts, but there have been positive signs of late. It ran fourth at Warwick Farm last start and that indicated a potential return to form. Each way chance in an even race.

Diambra is a one-win mare which finished a nose behind How Sweet It Is last start at Goulburn. The four-year-old is trained by John O’Shea and its breeding suggests it will handle the rise up to 1900m. It gets the inside draw with Avdulla in the saddle so expect a nice effort.

Race 4 tip: Bella Galeano to win at Bet365.com

Race 5 – Ranvet’s Neutrolene Handicap (1100m)

Sugar Bay Leonard is a talented gelding which looks to have winning credentials. The Joe Pride-trained gelding has great statistics at Canterbury with four starts for one win and two placings. It has finished out of the money in only one of five starts at this distance and it took a nice horse to beat it last start. Should sit just off the pace with Bowman in the saddle and finish strongly.

I’m Usain is an experienced six-time winner which will appreciate the 3kg claimer. The six-year-old won its only start on this track and it will get all favours from barrier two. It stays in this grade after running second at Warwick Farm last start and it should go close.

Race 6 – Tabcorp Handicap (1250m)

Sanaya is an under-performing mare which was won only one of 12 starts. The Waller-trained runner has seven placings to its name, but it’s finding it hard to cross the line first. The daughter of More Than Ready flashed home to run second last start and it must be considered on that basis. Too good to drop completely and this isn’t a strong field.

Once More A Lady won like a horse going places last start. The Joe Pride-trained filly put two lengths on subsequent winner Nonpareil and that form should hold up nicely. The three-year-old had consistent form behind some nice types prior and it should enjoy the rise in distance. Expecting it to be well-favoured in the market.

Race 6 tip: Once More A Lady to win at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 7 – Pluck @ Vinery Handicap (1550m)

Miami Dade is overdue a win and it gets Godolphin’s James Doyle in the saddle. The four-year-old showed plenty of promise last season, but it hasn’t quite lived up to expectations this time in. It has shown glimpses of being able to win at midweek level and there are no superstars in this field. Solid each way chance.

Kingsguard won’t remain a maiden runner for much longer. The New Zealand import is now with Team Hawkes and it took on some tough opposition last campaign. The four-year-old finished second in back-to-back races at Warwick Farm before running third at Rosehill behind Dark Eyes. It disappointed at Beaumont last start, but expect a better effort.

Race 7 tip: Kingsguard to win at CrownBet.com.au
