BRC to re-open memberships

The Brisbane Race Club will re-open its membership book soon having suspended new applications a couple of months ago.

The BRC suspended new applications for membership on June 19 after it became known Eagle Farm would be closed for an indefinite period.

It led to criticism from several former members who had intended re-joining the BRC so they could stand for the board.

BRC chairman Neville Bell said the matter would go to the next board meeting and he expected to re-open applications after that.

“We should be in the position to accept new membership very soon. We didn’t want to take new members when we couldn’t tell them what position we would be in,” Bell said.

“But the report into the closure of Eagle Farm has been handed down and we can now make our position clear to all members or new members that Eagle Farm will be out until April.”

Bell said he had written to existing members explaining a bonus and reward system which would in some various ways compensate for fewer meetings.

“It is about $150 in rewards and bonuses which is roughly half the annual fee,” he said.

Bell said it was hoped Doomben could take most of the Saturday meetings vacated by Eagle Farm being closed.

“But as for mid-weeks we are still in discussions. We have to be fair to other clubs,” he said.
