Bold ambitions for Garnett Taylor’s Gypsy

ULTRA-CONSISTENT filly Bold Gypsy continued her wonderful recent record at Rockhampton on Saturday, after the three-year-old took out the Leading Edge Jewellers Handicap as a short priced favourite.

The $2.60 top elect at Crownbet.com.au hit the front just after the 400m mark, but was challenged again by Stella Gris ($1.30 at WilliamHill.com.au) in the dying stages, but the class advantage shone through as it hit the line strongly to record its fourth career win.

Margo Maree made late ground on the leading pair to return $1.60 at Sportsbet.com.au.

Bold Gypsy’s trainer Garnett Taylor was circumspect when asked about the filly, preferring to praise the form of the horse rather than making outlandish predictions about what may come.

“She won, she went pretty well and I was really happy with her,” Taylor told HorseBetting.com.au.

“She’s very honest.”

The three-year-old is only ten runs into its career to date, but has already registered four wins and two placings.

The daughter of Gypsy Star has already displayed progressive-like qualities, and Taylor believes he is only beginning to scratch the surface of the filly’s ability.

“She’s always been consistent,” the trainer said.

Taylor said he has had the luxury throughout the filly’s career of picking and choosing the right races to help cultivate a quality racing record, even though the three-year-old has had a hectic schedule over the past year on the track.

“We always place them where we think they can win. She won her maiden in Townsville about 12 months ago, which means she’s has ten starts in 12 months so we’re happy with the consistency.”

Following Saturday’s win, the trainer is looking to go full circle with Bold Gypsy.

Taylor said the team is looking at taking the filly back to where it all began for what will be the biggest race of its short career to date.

“I’m thinking about taking her to Townsville on Townsville 2YO Classic Day, where I reckon she’ll go really well.

“It’s been a matter of getting her in the right races, but now I reckon she’s ready to step up and we’ll see what she’s got in three weeks.”

While the trainer was reluctant to make lofty statements about his horse following Saturday’s win, Taylor believes the Bold Gypsy camp will head to Townsville full of confidence.

“She hasn’t done anything wrong in her career so far, so we are expecting another solid run from her.”
