Blazing Speed wins Champions And Charter Cup in bobbing finish

Blazing Speed won the Group 1 Champions And Charter Cup at Sha Tin on Sunday in one of the closest finishes in history.

Jockey Neil Callan produced Blazing Speed around the home turn as former Australasian runner Werther went along the inside of runners and Victory Magic came down the outside. The three went to the line locked as one, but Blazing Speed got in the winning stride.

The win gave trainer Tony Cruz his fourth consecutive Champions And Charter Cup and Blazing Speed its second win after winning in 2014.

“He’s easy to train, he has a fantastic character,” Cruz said. “He’s seven years old but as long as he keeps going we’ll keep going with him.”

Callan have the seven-year-old the perfect ride and had all the momentum as they approached the home turn.

“It was a nice even tempo and then when the pace lifted halfway around the turn he was actually so much more relaxed that I had to give him a shake to get him going,” Callan said.

“Once we hit the corner and I straightened him up I just gave him one slap down the shoulder and he immediately came into the bridle and I knew he’d give me everything to the line.

“Whether that was win, lose or draw I knew he’d go out fighting. And he did but on the right end!”

Hugh Bowman made comment about the extra distance tripping Werther up, all but dispelling any thoughts of going to the Melbourne Cup.

“He’s just not as effective at that distance.”

Werther is still well-fancied in the 2016 Cox Plate market. The Moore-trained runner is $11 with Sportsbet.
